JACK TRICE STADIUM • AMES, IOWA
SEPT. 27, 2014 • ATTENDANCE: 51,776 BAYLOR HEAD COACH Art Briles
Opening statement:
"Really nice win. I have a lot of respect for coach Rhoads and his staff and Iowa State football. I can say it now that it's over; this is a tough venue to come into without question. They do a great job here. The people just do an outstanding job, and we have a lot of respect for them. The thing that was different about this week from normal weeks is that they had two weeks to prepare for us from a mental standpoint and fan excitement and just getting everybody ready for the game. They had a ranked team coming into town on a Saturday night with a nationally televised game where they've been really good through the years. I'm really proud of our guys for holding tough mentally and being strong, playing well early on both sides of the ball and giving us a little bit of a cushion as we finished up the game. Our main objective is to win and get on the plane happy."
On the offensive line:
"The key tonight was our O-line. I think they did a really great job. No sacks on Petty tonight, we threw it 35 times in the first half. I thought Shock ran really tough and well and picked us up two big fourth downs, and he had a pretty good touchdown run. That's on the O-line also. I think Bryce is playing as well as anyone right now."
On the game plan for tonight:
"We wanted to throw the football. We felt that it fit our personnel well tonight. Our plan coming in was to throw the ball, we wanted to throw it 60 times."
On getting a road win:
"It's tough to win on the road. Iowa State is a good football team. We did what we had to do. We're not happy, we're not patting each other on the back or saying were the best team around. We did a workman-like job tonight and took care of business in an environment that wanted to beat us."
BAYLOR QB Bryce Petty
On offensive aggressiveness:
"Our job is to make a point every time we come out. It doesn't matter who it is. If they're on our schedule, it's our job to dominate. We try to do that every week. It's a point for us, but it's a point every week. We did what we needed to do tonight. There are still some things to work on, but for our first conference game and road game in this environment, I thought we did very well."
On the return of top receivers:
"They're alright. It's like a little kid on Christmas. I got my toys back. When they're in there, explosive plays are waiting to happen every time they touch the ball. I missed [Goodley] a couple times, and we had to get our timing right. It was great having them out there."
On Iowa State defense:
"They did a good job of taking away everything deep. They did a good job of keeping everything in front of them, which is something I think a lot of defenses are going to do. We just have to roll with the punches, and I think our guys did a great job of adjusting.
BAYLOR WR Corey Coleman
On returning to action:
"It's been a while since we've been out there. It was exciting to be back. It was a great feeling being out there with my quarterback. It was a great time. I was very happy to come out fully healthy. I'm a little out of shape, so I still have to work on that in practice."
On getting touches early in the game:
"It was all up to coach. We practice every day, running every route hard. We have Bryce on the field. He's really smart and is great at decision making."
IOWA STATE HEAD COACH PAUL RHOADS
Opening statement:
"I think we all would agree that's a very good Baylor football team that we watched tonight. They will represent the Big 12 Conference well as the season goes along. I'm very pleased with the way our guys came out and played in the second half and quite honestly pleased with the way we finished up the first quarter. One of our goals was to start positively and we did that. Being 14-7 at the end of the first quarter gave us the opportunity to compete in this ball game and we didn't follow that up in the second quarter.
On playing a true freshman running back:
"We made a decision to play him. By that I mean he was going to be a part of a package tonight, he was going to get carries, with the idea that moving forward with eight games to go this season that he was going to be a part of our offense. We had struggles with short yardage. We don't have a back of his physical stature that's an upperclassman, so we moved ahead and he'll be part of the rotation."
On running attack:
"It's a big concern because there is no running attack. It's not the back field it's a combination of everything that it takes to establish a running game. It needs to drastically improve. I wouldn't say it's a surprise. Coming into the season you have to find out how people are going to play against the competition. Did we run the ball in training camp? Yes, we ran the ball in training camp. Have we ran it before in games? No, not with any sustained success. We've figured that out through five weeks and four games I promise you, we're searching for ways to have angles and have leverage and have plays and to improve."
On Jauan Wesley:
"We've got three wide receivers in our two deep that have been lost for the season through three ball games. So we made a decision that Jauan was the next man ready to go and he's out there and you'll see him the rest of the season."
IOWA STATE WIDE RECEIVER ALLEN LAZARD
On the game:
"I'm just happy that my team fought the whole game, we never really gave up we just have to focus on the positive of the game and reflect on the negative of how we played."
IOWA STATE RUNNING BACK AARON WIMBERLY
On Baylor:
"Baylor is a great team. We had great preparation going into it, we just have to minimize mistakes."
On Iowa State's goal going into the game:
"We came here to fight and we and we weren't going to give up just because they had points above us. Our goal was to go out there and fight and that's just what we did."
