Sept. 29, 2014
Opening Statement:
"Good afternoon. A big, big conference win. Anytime you can go get a conference win, it's a big deal. It's a huge win. We have a lot of respect for Iowa State, without question, and for Coach Rhoads. The things they're doing up there as a football program and as a university on game day are very impressive. For our guys to go up there and be businesslike, and play the game and not the environment, I thought was really a testament to where they're at as a football team. We'll have the same test this week, without question, in Austin."
On Texas' defense:
"They've always played good defense and this year is no exception. They're very well coached, fundamentally sound, and they play at a high level. And they play with a lot of confidence. That's something we've always seen from Texas, and Coach Strong and his staff have done a great job of keeping that tradition alive and maybe even expanding on it. So they're going to be a really tough opponent, without question, both sides of the ball-not just defensively, but all the way across the board."
On Baylor's successful running game:
"It all starts with the O-line, of course, without question. We felt like we kind of beat our heads against the wall prior to the other night and did some the other night, but Iowa State is a really good run-stop defense. They always have been. So we felt like if we could run the ball on them, it would give us a real good opportunity to win the football game. I thought our guys did a great job up front. And defensively, our defensive line I thought was very dominant. Those two sides of the ball have to be very dominant for us to have a very good football team, and so far this year, I think we've got a lot better O-line and I think our defensive line has been dominant every game."
On having Antwan Goodley, Corey Coleman and Clay Fuller back:
"It was a tremendous boost, for them and for us, because those guys have all helped us win a conference championship. Levi (Norwood) got released today, and he'll be ready to go this weekend. Devin Chafin, I think he'll be ready to go this weekend. So the deal with Antwan, Corey, and Clay is that there's a difference between practice and play. We've got to get them in game shape, and I think they got some good work the other night. I think as the season progresses, they'll get there. We try to get our guys to where they can sustain the whole game, and it's not that situation yet."
On whether Baylor is taking over the stage from Texas:
"We certainly don't feel that way and don't look at things that way. In our profession, it's a week-to-week business. We look at every week as a new season, and we're not trying to make long-term statements one way or the other. What we're trying to do is go out and play well for 60 minutes, and then we go to the next season, which is next week. All that stuff has really no bearing on what's going to happen Saturday or any Saturday. Not just this Saturday, but I mean the next Saturday, when we play TCU. It'll be a different one, different season."
On getting so many sacks from the defensive line:
"It helps a lot on the back end because some of those sacks are covered sacks, because we're able to keep people under coverage. That's big, but a lot of those sacks are coming because we're good. Those guys are good up front, now. They're getting better and they're playing at a really intense level that we haven't seen for a while. So we've got some guys that are, I think, really playing at a championship caliber level, and that's what's attributed to the sacks more than anything else."
On Baylor quarterbacks' success (from RG3 to Florence and now to Petty) and how that affects recruiting new quarterbacks:
"That's what I love about Bryce--he is a guy that's never going to be satisfied. I think it just says that those are good players. Robert is a tremendous player, Nick Florence is a tremendous player and Bryce is a tremendous player. All these guys are just really good football players, and at our level, Division 1 football, you have to have a QB that's special if you're going to have a chance to have a really good football team. We've been fortunate enough to have three guys here at Baylor that are all special players. So that just kind of adds up to give us an opportunity to have a chance for success."
On Spencer Drango's leadership:
"Spencer is a great player and he does provide a lot of leadership-and the reason he provides it is because he's a producer. Like I've always said, you can't lead unless you produce. So when he does something, says something, people pay attention. But we've got a lot of guys like that. I feel like, like I've always said, any guy on the football team can be an inspirer or leader. Spencer just happens to do his by his actions, quite honestly. He's not a big talk guy. He's an action guy, and he's a really, really good football player in a very, very vital position for us, which is left tackle."
On what he has to say about the Texas players' tweets:
"Nothing. I mean, what am I supposed to say? We're still Baylor, TCU is still TCU, Oklahoma is still Oklahoma. I'm not sure what it means."
On Saturday's game being a "statement game" and Kirk Herbstreit's comments:
"I don't know how the playoff deal is going to happen. I think it's just going to play itself out, quite honestly. We can speculate, but that's only going to be speculation. You got to win football games. That's what our job is. When you're taking four teams and not 65, I'm not sure there is a quality loss. But I think the committee will decide that, and they haven't asked for my number."
On this week's game being a big defensive test for Baylor:
"It is a big test for us as a football team. I think every time you step on the field, it's a test, regardless of the opponent. It's a test for yourself to play at the level that you feel like you're worthy of playing at. And that's really the way we look at it. To us, it's about us being who we are and playing at the level we feel like is deserving of the championship football team. And so that's our goal and that's our duty every time we step on the field. It's not about who we're playing. It's about how we play as a football team ourselves."
On all the Texas comments and whether Baylor is getting under their skin:
"I'm not sure if it has any bearing on the football game at all. Usually it comes down to turnovers, field position and momentum. So whether we're getting under anyone's skin or not, I don't know. Like I said, we're just trying to be us, and how people view us, that's their right. We can't tell somebody how to think about us. We can just think about ourselves the way we want to, and we know how we feel about ourselves."
On Corey Coleman's big game coming back (and KD Cannon's performance):
"We expected Corey to really contribute. I didn't think he was as healthy as he was. He was really a little better than what I thought he was, going by what he'd done in practice. I thought he was about 85 to 90 percent, and I thought he was close to 100 come game time, so that was really encouraging. He's a tough guy that can catch the football. And KD, I was impressed because he'd been such a vertical guy, and we used him a little differently. He was very, very effective. So that just helps for the overall standpoint of what we're trying to accomplish offensively, which is to make first downs and score points."
On being in the Top 10, and this time this year compared to this time last year:
"The thing that helps us this year, of course, is the level of play that Bryce brings to the table with the experience and confidence that he has right now. We didn't have that a year ago. But we know that starting last week, every week from now is going to be a test. Not to equate it to real war, but in the football world, it's a war. That's what makes it great. Anytime you get into conference play, everybody knows each other, and that's why you see this team maybe beat that team when you didn't think they could do it. Every game is virtually almost a tossup when you get into conference play, and we understand that."
Opening Statement on UT:
"Just so we're clear, I'm not going to answer any questions about any of their tweets or anything like that."
On UT's defense having intercepted nine passes thus far:
"They fly around to the ball. They're very well-coached, and they've got a lot of athletes out there, so it's a challenge. I'm looking forward to. Anytime you've got a defense as good as theirs, that's the challenge that football brings, and that's what you like to have. You definitely notice that on film. I've got to make sure I'm smart with the ball, and protect the ball to give us the best chance to be successful."
On the running game flourishing and how it helps the passing game:
"I thought our guys up front did a great job last week, and it was something they had kind of been waiting for. The first couple of games we weren't too hot on running the ball, so I was glad that we finally got some momentum with that. That's what those big guys like to do is put the team on their back and let us roll off of them. I was very pleased with how well they played, and they stepped up. There were a couple of drives where we needed to run the ball, and they stepped up to the plate and really came through, so I was glad to see that. It gives them confidence because they were kind of upset with themselves."
On getting through the first couple years at Baylor while having to sit the bench:
"I feel like there were a lot of people that God put in my life for that reason. There were a lot of venting sessions, asking myself, `Is this really what I need to be doing, and is this where I'm supposed to be?' I felt like once I really trusted in and believed that God had a plan with what He was doing in my life, that's when everything really settled in and I knew this is where I was supposed to be. It's all about your circle, and who you trust, and I've got a great support staff with my family from back home, great friends around me and great people here. I knew all along I just had to sit and wait my turn, and it worked out for the best."
On the defense and what has impressed Petty so far about them:
"I think our defense is easily one of the best in the nation. To go up against them every day has made us a lot better offensively. We've had to start scheming against our defense when we play them, and anytime you have to do that, that's when you know you've got a great defense. We make each other better. Day in and day out they want to be best. We want to be the best, so when we go one-on-ones we clash, and that's what you want to have on a team. Their play has been outstanding. They give us the ball back and we kind of feed off each other, so hats off to Coach Bennett and his staff. You've got guys like Shawn Oakman, Bryce Hager, Jamal Palmer and Orion Stewart, I could go down the list, but they're all playing really well right now. They're really confident in what they're doing. When you've got defensive guys that are athletically as freakish as some of those guys are, and they're playing confident, that's when you've got a monster."
On if Petty is satisfied with the pace of the offense:
"I thought our tempo went really well last week. I think there are still things here and there that we need to improve on, but that's every week. For an away game, for the first conference game, I thought everything went really well, and I think we'll only get better from here."
On comparing Texas teams from this year and last year:
"Last year was last year. I'd be crazy to sit up here and tell you that we're looking at last year's tape, because we're not. We're different from last year, they're different from last year. For us it's about the here and now. They are a great team. They're very well coached. Coach Strong does a great job defensively and schematically with his guys. They're athletic, so he kind of let's them play from what it looks like on tape. We're going to have to be very good up front. We're going to have to be disciplined with our receivers and take what they give us. Everything we do is Baylor Football. We play versus Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, Iowa State or whoever it is, there's a constant in there and that's Baylor. We have to make sure we just focus on Baylor, and if we play Baylor Football it normally works out."
On whether this is a statement game for Baylor and people questioning them:
"People have questioned Baylor ever since I've been here. I think every game is a statement game. It doesn't matter. It's not in our control of who we play, but what is in control is that we play them, and how we play them. Our goal and our job is to go out as players and to dominate. That's our goal every week is to try and dominate whoever is on our schedule. It doesn't matter who it is. It's not up to me to try and silence the critics or disprove what anyone else thinks. My job as quarterback of this team is to make sure we're successful on every drive and every play, and that's what I plan to do. Each week is a proving week, and each game is a statement game, so it doesn't matter who we're playing, we want to make a statement every time we go out there."
On having Spencer Drango at left tackle and what it means:
"It means two things: One, it means that I can pretty much sit back there and have a picnic, and two, it means I have to make a lot of cookies and desserts. He's great, along with the other four guys there. They do a fantastic job week in and week out, and I haven't gotten touched since we've started, which they're very aware of and they let me know that, which is good. They're going to have a good week this week. I'm excited to see the challenge that they're about to face with the front four from Texas, so it's going to be exciting. There are going to be a lot of challenges all over the field, but this is what you play for."
On whether this is a bigger game for Petty than others, being a Texas guy:
"Putting on the green and gold is what makes it big. Being here is where I'm supposed to be, it's where I want to be. If I wanted to be somewhere else then I would be there. I take a lot of pride in putting on my Baylor colors, and I say that with a lot of pride because of what these guys do day in and day out. That's what makes the pride come out of me is being around these guys. I'm exactly where I want to be, and I wouldn't change it for the world."
On playing with one of the nation's best offenses:
"The offense is fun and explosive. It's fun to be a part of that `show.' The guys here are all one family. We like to give each other a hard time. It's like having 14 brothers. New ones come in and others leave, but you always stay in touch. It's one, big family and a lot of fun."
On his history at DKR Stadium:
"I went to a bunch of games growing up and got to play in DKR for a high school playoff game. I've never won at UT. My first game was the 2012 season where it didn't go our way, and in high school we lost the playoff game. I'd love to finally come out with a win there."
On having Corey Coleman and Antwan Goodley back:
"I think it opened a lot of things up because we are a hard receiving group to scheme a defense around. It wasn't a surprise (that Corey played well) because he had been holding back in practice waiting for the game. That's what he told us all week."
On matching up against Xavien Howard in practice:
"To me, he's the best cornerback in the Big 12. He just has that killer instinct. Going against him, you know he's going hard every rep. It makes you better every time, and we make him better."
On the running game's success at Iowa State:
"I felt like it was pretty good. It was better than our first couple of games. It all started with our offensive line playing their tails off. They came out and beat the other team up front. It helped us find the holes and made our jobs a lot easier."
On playing on the road for another week:
"Champions win games on the road, so we are stepping up to that challenge. We're just going to start by preparing ourselves like it's another game. That's what we have to do to stay focused."
On making the transition back to playing:
"I felt 100 percent, but I wasn't sure how good my cardio was going to be and how much I could go full speed. (Practice speed) is a lot different than game speed. I didn't practice that much during the week, but I knew that going into the game I was going to play. My mindset was already made up that I needed to play."
On playing on the road at Texas:
"It's another big away game this week. Like Bryce (Petty) said, UT is very good and well-coached. We're not worrying about what has happened in the past. We're going in with the mindset that they are good and preparing like they're the championship team."
