IRVING, Texas - Baylor sophomore quarterback Seth Russell has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 70-6 win over Northwestern State, the league announced Monday.

In the first start of his career, the Garland, Texas, product racked up 438 yards passing and was responsible for six touchdowns in only one half of action. Russell tallied TD passes of 82, 50, 42, 61 and 57 yards as well as adding a three-yard scoring scamper.

His passing yards and passing touchdowns are both BU records for a half. Russell finished his day completing 16-of-25 passing and his NCAA passer efficiency rating of 277.168 is the best performance in the country this season.

The sophomore's six TDs responsible for tied the Baylor record, which had been accomplished three other times and his 438 passing yards were the third-most in a game in BU history.

His performance helped the Bears build a 49-3 halftime lead over the Demons and he did not play in the second half.

Russell is BU's first offensive Big 12 weekly award winner of the season. The Bears had three honorees last season as Lache Seastrunk (Oct. 7), Shock Linwood (Nov. 11) and Bryce Petty (Nov. 18) were recognized. In total, Baylor has had 10 offensive players honored a combined 15 times since 2002, including nine honorees in the last four years.

Russell shares this week's offensive honor with Kansas State quarterback Jake Waters.

After a 2-0 start to the year, Baylor plays its first road game of the year and its third game in 13 days with a trip to New York to face Buffalo at 7 p.m. CT €ˆon Friday, Sept. 12. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN.
