Men's Golf 10/23/2015 12:00:00 AM
Oct. 23, 2015 WACO, Texas -- Baylor men's golf's eighth-annual Royal Oaks Intercollegiate has been cancelled due to heavy rain in Dallas that made the Royal Oaks Country Club course unplayable. The event will not be rescheduled this season.

With the cancellation, Baylor's 2015 fall season is complete after three tournaments. The Bears tied for third place at the Gopher Invitational, tied for 12th at the Fighting Illini Invitational and took eighth place at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate.

Also on Friday, Baylor regents announced a lead gift and approval for phase one of construction on a new golf practice facility near the Baylor campus. Regents announced that the golf practice facility will be named in honor of Billy Williams, B.B.A. '63, and his family of Naples, Florida, who provided a multimillion dollar gift for the project. The practice facility will be located on a 14-acre site on University Parks Drive next to the Willis Family Equestrian Center and will include an on-site practice course, a driving range and a clubhouse. Fundraising for the project is ongoing.

Senior Andreas Gjesteby finished the fall season leading the team with a 72.22 stroke average. He and Frederik Andersen tied for the team lead with eight of nine rounds counting toward the team score. Andersen finished second on the squad with a 73.22 stroke average.

The Bears also got contributions from Braden Bailey and Garrett May, who each played all three tournaments and carded stroke averages of 73.67 and 73.89, respectively. Matthew Perrine played one event, posting a 74.00 stroke average, and Hunter Shattuck played twice, recording a 74.83 stroke average.

Gjesteby's sixth-place finish at the Gopher Invitational was the best by a Baylor player during the fall, followed by May's 10th-place finish at the same event. Bailey and Gjesteby tied for the team lead with two top-25 finishes apiece. Andersen had one top-25 finish, along with the lowest round by a Baylor player during the season, a second-round 65 at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.

BU will begin its spring season at the Oak Hills Invitational, which will be played Feb. 8-9 at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas. Oak Hills is the first of six scheduled tournaments leading up to the Big 12 Conference Championship, which begins April 29 at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
