McLANE STADIUM - WACO, TEXAS
NOV. 14, 2015 - ATTENDANCE: 49,875 Baylor Head Coach Art Briles
On what went wrong à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I just think we made too many mistakes and had some untimely penalties there at the end, but Oklahoma played extremely well and got out of here with a win."
On Travon Blanchard's horsecollar penalty late in fourth quarter à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"That's massive because we had momentum and the game is all about momentum. So that was big and I haven't seen it, but it was called and you still have to stop them and we didn't. We did complement each other's football team very well tonight. The defense would get stops and the offense wouldn't do anything with the ball and sometimes a bit of vice versa. The good thing is we can still control our own destiny, try to finish out and do right and see where it all ends up. Oklahoma already has a Big 12 loss and that gives us one so there's a few of us banging around with one loss so you don't know what's going to happen on that and we will just see where it ends up."
On the team's preparation for the upcoming games at Oklahoma State and TCU à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"We're going to see. I can't predict the future. I certainly feel like I know and I have a lot of confidence in how we will prepare and how we will play. Thought the crowd was really good tonight, great atmosphere even with the weather being what it was. Just a tremendous boost for our players and great exposure for Baylor University. We did everything that we had to do, except win the game."
On Baylor's run game à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"We had a little success early and really into our second drive we ran the ball and then turned it over. We go seven yards, seven yards, turn it over. I think that flipped a little momentum, even though they didn't score off the turnover it still flips a little momentum in the game. We've done pretty well running the football this year. You'd like to think that you can continue to do that, and we weren't very good tonight overall. That certainly hurt us. "
On what Oklahoma did to limit Corey Coleman's impact à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Yeah, they did. They rolled to him a whole bunch. They really did a good job with him and we didn't do a good job of taking advantage of the other things we had. But they came in and by not being able to run the ball, it allowed them to do some things on the back end that limited everything and that's why you keep trying to run, because if you run, then you can define the back end a little better."
Baylor QB Jarrett Stidham
On the looks Oklahoma's defense gave à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"They were mixing it up pretty well out there. Hat's off to them, they are a great football team with great football players. They mixed it up quite a bit, but we just did not execute on certain things we needed to."
On Baylor still being in contention for a Big 12 title à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Absolutely, we are still in it. We aren't going to let this loss define our season. We are going to come back tomorrow, look at the tape, go to the drawing board and prepare for Oklahoma State and see what we can do in Stillwater."
On learning about himself from this game à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I think you learn a lot. Especially for me, I had lots of growing up to do, and getting the experience down was important. I'll continue to take it day-by-day and week-by-week, get back to the drawing board and prepare for Oklahoma State."
Baylor OT Spencer Drango
On where the team goes from here à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"If you dwell in the past, then you'll get beat again. We have a big task ahead of us. This current administration has never won in Stillwater, so we're focusing on getting ready for that game."
On the possibility of still winning the Big 12 à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"There's nothing to hang our heads about. We lost at home and that sucks, but we can still win the conference so that's what our goal is."
Baylor LB Travon Blanchard
On his horsecollar tackle late in the fourth quarter à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"When you're going full speed in the game, it's tough. I pretty much just tried to grab jersey and bring [Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield] down, but I had bad hand placement and got a flag that extended the drive to help them score."
On the large amount of penalties against Baylor à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"We have to limit our penalties. When we can, we have to get them off the field, and we can't let them extend drives. We have to get them off the field and get the ball back to our offense."
Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops
Opening statementà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I have to start by complimenting Baylor for a well-played, hard-fought game. It was really a night that went back and forth, and they have a lot of good players. Art [Briles] and his staff do an excellent job, so it was really a challenge out there. I'm really excited about the way our players played and fought the entire night. Really, every part of the game was well-played. Offensively, Baker Mayfield was tremendous, and all the guys around him made big plays. [Samaje Perine] had another big night. Running the ball, throwing it, on and on -- we had the one interception, the guy made a great play on it. Defensively, I thought we were outstanding also. After the first series we settled in and really started to control the run game. We got them into more predictable yardage situations and I thought our secondary was great in really challenging their receivers and coming up with some big plays, some interceptions. It all started though with controlling the run game, and once we were able to do that, we challenged them outside and really did a great job. Kicking game was solid, ball was slippery, but a good solid team win. Offense, defense, I thought really complimented one another well and came up with a solid win."
On never being out of the play with Baker Mayfield à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Yeah, sometimes we have a few more sacks than a few teams, and that's why. His ability to scramble out of some things are different from a lot of other guys, and you have to live with those. Sometimes he gets trapped in the pocket and can't make something happen, so you're going to have some of those. He makes far more plays outside of the pocket than just throwing the ball away or surrendering, so that's how it goes."
On what message this win sends à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"You go into the number six team's backyard on a night like this and play this way, it just tells you that we're one of those teams that has a chance at everything. We're just going to keep trying to improve and give yourself an opportunity next week to play just as well or better. Again, you come into here and win by 10 -- that's certainly a positive thing."
Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield
On his wild play for last score of the game à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"They reacted, that's what you have to do in football at times. I'm back there running around, and [Dimitri Flowers] just did a great job of getting open and I was able to find him and get the ball to him."
On responding to Baylor's points à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"That's something we just talked about all week. We knew Baylor was going to score points. We needed to just focus on us, so we went out and executed. Our goal was just to react and respond to them, and that's what we did."
Oklahoma WR Sterling Shepard
On outside distractions à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I'm just taking it one game at a time and not listening to anything outside, and we're just keeping it in house. We're just striving to play better in the next game."
On making a statement in this game à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Yeah, you always want to make a statement for yourself. Your next performance, however, is what people are going to remember you by, so you want to come out and compete. The offense today just allowed me to get open and get the ball. The line did a great job blocking, Samaje [Perine] did a great job running the ball, and Baker [Mayfield] was fantastic as always."
