BOONEà ¢Ã¢' ¬Ã‹ € PICKENS STADIUM - STILLWATER, OKLA.
NOV. 21, 2015 - ATTENDANCE: 58,669 Baylor Head Coach Art Briles
Opening statement:
"It was a hard-fought game against a really good football team. I have so much respect for Oklahoma State. They've been behind in some games and have come back three or four times this year. They're very composed and never panicked. They stay within their system, and I just think they're an extremely well-coached football team. They're a really tough team to beat. I'm proud of our team. They really wanted to come in here and prove that they were a good football team. I feel like we took a step in that direction this evening. I'm really proud of the effort, attitude and belief that our guys played with."
On Chris Johnson:
"He hasn't had a lot (of reps with first-string offense). We give equal reps through practice with the ones and the twos. He's spent most of his time with the twos. I thought he was fabulous. I thought Jarrett (Stidham) was unbelievable. I'm not sure we punted in the first half, and then Jarrett was unable to go in the second half. We have a lot of confidence in Chris. Everything he did was not surprising to us. He is an extremely talented player that just has a gracious attitude about him. He's just a great, great teammate, and I'm really excited for him."
On Johnson's first drive:
"It was huge because, first of all, it gave us a 17-point lead. It allowed us to keep doing what we had been doing in the first half. We were stretching the field in the first half, too."
On winning despite the team's injuries:
"It's just about surviving late in the year. It really is, and we've been real fortunate the last two years. We've stayed extremely healthy, while other people have been beat up. This year, it's different. We kind of got beat up three or four weeks ago. It's adding up a little bit, but if you're looking, you can see where it stops, where the end is. You just fight through every play and then we'll get to the end and have three or four weeks off in December where we can get ready for our bowl game. We've got to battle hard for the next few days."
On Baylor winning in Stillwater for the first time since 1939:
"This is our fifth time in eight years with the way the schedule has fallen, and this is our first time to come out of here with a good taste in our mouth. It's an extremely tough place to win with the environment, but it's also because they're an extremely good football team. They're always a good team."
On Jarrett Stidham's condition:
"Honestly, he's not very good. We're going to have to hustle to see where he's able to go for next week. It's his right ankle and his hand. He got the hand hit real early in the game. It's really puffy and he can't grip the ball, but they don't think there's a break in there. I'm not sure if they've X-rayed it yet. As I was walking through, they were working on the ankle. He battled hard. He got twisted up pretty bad on our sideline."
Baylor wide receiver KD Cannon
On coming to Stillwater:
"We were really fired up because coming to Stillwater we hadn't won here at all. It was an important game for Coach Briles and the team."
Baylor quarterback Chris Johnson
On the amount of practice he had coming into this week:
"As far as first-team reps, I really had none. I took every single snap with the second string."
On his mentality:
"You have to go in every single week as if you're the starter, whether you're getting first-team reps or second team. When they told me I had to go in, I felt I was ready. I have to give credit to my teammates, they told me stay ready. I want to give all the thanks to those guys."
On what the coaching staff told him:
"They had all the confidence in me. They told me to just go out there and do what I do. They told me 'Just do what you do, and you'll be fine.'"
Baylor running back Devin Chafin
On the importance of the win:
"It was huge, especially with the place [Oklahoma State] was in and the environment."
Baylor linebacker Taylor Young
On playing in Stillwater:
"We haven't won here since 1939 so this was a really big deal."
Baylor defensive lineman Andrew Billings
On playing Oklahoma State:
"[Oklahoma State] had a lot to lose. We knew they were going to come out and play hard, and we had to match that. We had to double their energy because we already had a loss. We had to throw that out and beat OSU."
Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy
Opening statement:
"That was a good football team that we played tonight. They made plays early in the game and kind of took control of the game. We battled back and then we got a couple of stops on defense but couldn't get anything going on offense. We didn't run the football effectively enough to give ourselves a chance. We were able to throw the ball some, but they stayed balanced. They rushed for 300 yards. That was the difficult thing for us, and we never really could overcome it. They have a lot of team speed, and they caught us at times tonight. I thought our guys fought. They never gave up. Their attitude was good, and they played with a lot of effort. We made some adjustments on defense and slowed them down a little bit, but we couldn't effectively stop the run when we needed to. We also weren't able to rush the ball and stay balanced. We've got to rally these guys, get them back tomorrow and start getting ready for the next game."
On if Baylor bringing in a different quarterback slowed down the adjustment process:
"Not really. They ran the same plays. There was a little bit more of the quarterback run, read and zone with him but not as much to really talk about. They were able to run the ball behind those big guys, and they were able to throw the ball down the field to those fast guys. When they're hitting on that segment of their offense, they're tough to deal with right now. They have great speed on the outside. We needed to be a little more effective with stopping the run without letting them get into our secondary, which puts us in single coverage."
On if fatigue became a factor with Baylor running over 100 plays:
"It could have been in the run game, but they got us more in the first quarter than they did from the middle of the second quarter up through the fourth, I thought. They got us early in the game with the quick scores. When we did get some stops on some turnovers, we didn't take advantage of it on offense. Then we let the game spread out a little bit, and the catch-up routine was not a very good fit for us based on what we were trying to do in the game. We got behind, and we became one-dimensional. That wasn't effective for our team."
On the frustration of an ineffective running game:
"We've talked about trying to improve it and get a little better each week. It's not any one particular area of our game, but it's something that we have to try to continue to improve and work at. There are ways that you can get around itat times, but when you run into the situation we were in tonight, it kind of shows up and is difficult to overcome. I've been mentioning throughout the year that we need to get going with the running game. The flip-side, though, is that we had two or three stops there on defense, but we couldn't overcome it and score. When you play those guys with the talent they have on the perimeter, it's difficult to catch up when you get behind by more than 10 points."
Oklahoma State wide receiver David Glidden
On today's game:
"They're a good team, and they made a lot more plays than we did today."
On preparing for next week's game against Oklahoma:
"Hopefully, we come out with a little more fire than we did this week. It's Bedlam for a Big 12 championship so that should say enough."
On Baylor's secondary:
"They're very improved from what I saw last year. They're better than what they looked like on film. Give credit to them, they made a lot of big plays. They were very solid on the things that they did and executed their game plan."
Oklahoma State safety Jordan Sterns
On today's performance:
"I just think we didn't execute. I gave up two big plays. It's frustrating, but we've just have to be ready for next week and learn from our mistakes. We need to practice hard, starting tomorrow."
Oklahoma State quarterback J.W. Walsh
On the team's effort today:
"I'm proud of the way our team fought. There were a lot of times in today's game that most teams would have laid down and quit, but we hung in there to the very end. Baylor, credit goes to them. They had a good plan and made a lot of big plays and made it difficult for us."
On next week's game against Oklahoma:
"People won't understand because it didn't seem like it, but we were so close in this game. A few big plays here and there on both sides of the ball might change that outcome. It's the little things. It starts in practice, and we need to have a good week of practice and that starts tomorrow."
