IRVING, Texas - For the third time in four years, the Baylor women's tennis team has been unanimously selected to claim the Big 12 regular season championship by a vote of the league's head coaches, conference officials announced Thursday.
The Lady Bears received nine first-place votes to secure the top spot over Oklahoma State, which tallied one first-place vote. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team in the poll.
Last season, Baylor finished the season ranked No. 14 in the country after posting a 26-7 record. The Lady Bears bring back three letterwinners from that team, including the Most Outstanding Performer from the 2014 Big 12 Championship, Ema Burgic. Burgic was also the Player of the Year in the Big 12 in 2013. Ranked No. 6 in the latest ITA Team Rankings, the Bears are 10-2 so far this season.
BU was unanimously picked to win the league in 2012 and 2014 as well. The Lady Bears ended up tying for second in 2012 and winning the league last year. Baylor has won 10 Big 12 regular season titles in its history.
Behind Baylor, Oklahoma State was picked to finish second in this year's conference race with 72 points. Texas Tech was picked next with 61 points, just edging out TCU for the third spot. The Horned Frogs have 60 points, followed by Texas with 50 and Oklahoma with 42
Sunflower State rivals Kansas (32 points) and Kansas State (25 points) came in No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. West Virginia comes in at No. 9 followed by Iowa State.
The Lady Bears open Big 12 play on March 13 by traveling to play Oklahoma State.
