THE RUNDOWN
BREMERTON, Wash. - The Baylor men's golf team shot 5-over-par 293 in Thursday's opening round at the NCAA Bremerton Regional, and the Bears are in 10th place heading to Friday's second round. Baylor is six strokes back of fifth place, which is the cut to advance to the NCAA National Championships.
UAB leads the tournament at 8-under-par, followed by TCU and Southern California tied in second place at 7-under-par. Iowa State and Washington are tied for fourth at 1-under-par, South Carolina is in sixth place after posting even-par and UC Davis is 1-over after the first round. The Bears are one stroke back of Michigan and Pepperdine tied for eighth at 4-over.
Two Baylor players finished the day among the top 10 individuals. Kyle Jones and Andreas Gjesteby both shot 2-under 70 in the opening round to finish the day in a tie for eighth place, four strokes back from the leader, Southern Cal's Sean Crocker (-6, 66).
Frederik Andersen shot 4-over and is in a tie for 50th place, and Filippo Zucchetti posted an opening round 5-over 77 to finish in a tie for 55th place. Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen is tied for 63rd place at 6-over par.
HIGHLIGHTS
? Gjesteby had six birdies in the opening round, which were the fourth-most of any player in the field.
? Andersen made par on 15 of 18 holes, tying the fourth-most pars of the day.
? Jones has the third-best par-4 scoring average at 3.80.
? Gjesteby leads the field in par-5 scoring average at 4.25.
? Jones and Gjesteby were two of only 14 players in the 75-player field to post under-par opening rounds.
? Andersen made par on his first 11 holes before a bogey on No. 3.
? Gjesteby made birdies on three of the final five holes on the back-nine.
STAT OF THE DAY
3 - The number of strokes under par the Bears played on hole No. 9 as a team - which was their last hole of the day after teeing off from No. 10 - accounting for three of the 15 birdies made on the hole in the opening round.
