WACO, Texas -- Quarterback Bryce Petty and linebacker Bryce Hager, key members of Baylor's 2013 and 2014 Big 12 championship squads, were selected in the 2015 NFL Draft. Petty was drafted by the New York Jets with the 103rd pick (fourth round) and Hager by the St. Louis Rams with the 224th pick (seventh round).
The duo were catalysts for the winningest class in BU history, that in five seasons were part of a school-record five straight bowl teams, two conference championships (2013 & 2014 Big 12 titles), two bowl wins and in four seasons of play (following redshirt year) totaled an incredible 26-1 home record (40-12 overall).
In seven years under head coach Art Briles the Bears have had a total of 21 players selected in the NFL Draft, including five first round choices. Baylor's 16 NFL Draft picks since 2011 are the most of any school in the state of Texas.
Petty was a two-time All-American at Baylor who set or tied 31 school, two Big 12 Conference and one NCAA record as a two-year starter (21-4 record). He threw for 8,195 yards and 62 TDs and ran for 338 yards and 21 TDs in 36 career games (25 starts), and finished seventh in the 2013 Heisman Trophy voting and 10th in 2014. He won the 2014 Bobby Bowden Award, the inaugural 2013 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, and was named the 2013-14 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year. Petty, also named the consensus 2013 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, set the NCAA career low interception percentage mark of 1.18.
Hager earned 2014 All-America honors and was a three-time All-Big 12 selection at middle linebacker at Baylor. He amassed 322 career tackles and 26 QB hurries as a three-year starter (32 career starts, 48 games played). His 202 career solo tackles ranks sixth on Baylor's all-time list, and in 2012 he led the Big 12, averaging 9.5 per-game. Hager's father, Britt, played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles.
