July 9, 2015 WACO, Texas – Baylor has several former players at various levels of professional baseball currently. Below is a summary on each player’s progress in the 2015 season.
Brad Kuntz | LHP | Milwaukee Brewers | Baylor, 2011-15
Kuntz was signed as an undrafted free agent on June 19 by the Milwaukee Brewers and was assigned to the Arizona Brewers at the Rookie level’s Arizona League. In four relief appearances he has a 1.80 ERA as he’s allowed nine hits and two runs with three walks and 12 strikeouts in 10.0 innings.
Brett Doe | C | Minnesota Twins | Baylor, 2013-14
After spending 2014 in the Rookie level, Doe started 2015 with the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the A level ball’s Midwest League and remains there. In 42 games he’s hitting .292 with 45 hits, nine doubles, three homers, 19 RBI, four steals and nine walks.
Josh Michalec | RHP | Colorado Rockies | Baylor, 2011-14
After spending 2014 in the Lo-A level, Michalec started 2015 and is currently at the A level with the Ashville Tourists in the South Atlantic League. In 33 relief appearances he has a 5.00 ERA as he’s allowed 23 runs on 37 hits with 13 walks and 36 strikeouts in 36.0 innings with 17 saves and 26 games finished.
Nathan Orf | OF/IF | Milwaukee Brewers | Baylor, 2012-13
Orf spent all of last season in the Hi-A level and has been in the AA level for 2015 with the Biloxi Shuckers of the Southern League. In 78 games he’s hitting .263 with 70 hits, 16 doubles, three triples, two homers, 24 RBI, five steals and 38 walks.
Cal Towey | 3B | Los Angeles Angels | Baylor, 2009-13
Towey is at the AA level with the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League after spending last year in the Hi-A level. In 64 games he’s hitting .290 with 43 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, one homer, 35 RBI, seven steals and 39 walks.
Tyler Bremer | RHP | Miami Marlins | Baylor, 2011-12
After spending time at the A and Hi-A levels last year Bremer has been in Hi-A all season in 2015 with the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League. In 25 relief appearances he has a 1.64 ERA as he’s allowed 11 runs on 32 hits and 11 walks with 41 strikeouts in 38.1 innings with one save and 10 games finished.
Max Muncy | 1B/3B | Oakland Athletics | Baylor, 2010-12
Muncy spent all of 2014 at the AA level before starting 2015 in AAA with the Nashville Sounds of the Pacific Coast League. In 21 games he’s hitting .268 with 22 hits, seven doubles, one triple, two homers, 11 RBI and 13 walks. On April 25, he made his Major League debut with the Athletics and in 34 games he’s hitting .203 with 16 hits, seven doubles, two homers, six RBI and eight walks. On June 30, he was sent back down to Nashville.
Josh Turley | LHP | Detroit Tigers | Baylor, 2010-12
Turley is at the AA level in 2015 with the Erie SeaWolves of the Eastern League after spending 2014 at the Hi-A and AA levels. He’s currently 8-5 with a 2.75 ERA in 15 starts as he’s allowed 39 runs on 88 hits and 24 walks with 63 strikeouts in 91.2 innings.
Logan Verrett | New York Mets | Baylor, 2009-11
Verrett spent 2014 in the AAA level before being claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles by the Texas Rangers in April. He started 2015 with the Rangers and made his Major League debut on April 8. In four relief appearances with the Rangers he had a 6.00 ERA as he allowed seven runs on 11 hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 9.0 innings. After being designated for assignment by the Rangers on April 25, he returned to the Mets, who drafted him. Since then he’s split time with the Mets and their AAA team, the Las Vegas 51s of the Pacific Coast League. With the Mets, he has a 0.73 ERA in six relief appearances as he’s allowed one run on four hits and four walks with 12 strikeouts in 12.1 innings with one save and three games finished. He’s currently with the 51s and has a 3.00 ERA in four relief appearances as he’s allowed 12 runs on 26 hits and 11 walks with 19 strikeouts in 30.0 innings.
Shawn Tolleson | Texas Rangers | Baylor, 2007-10
After a very successful first full year in MLB in 2014, Tolleson has become the closer for the Texas Rangers in 2015 in his second season with the club. In 35 relief appearances he has a 2.52 ERA with 12 saves and 19 games finished as he’s allowed 10 runs on 31 hits and seven walks with 38 strikeouts in 35.2 innings.
Beamer Weems | Texas Rangers | Baylor, 2006-08
Weems spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons playing independent ball and was signed away from the Sugar Land Skeeters on June 4, 2015. He was assigned to the AA level with the Frisco Roughriders of the Texas League and hit .100 with two hits in five games. On June 15 he was promoted to AAA with the Round Rock Express of the Pacific Coast League, where he’s hitting .173 with nine hits, three doubles, four RBI and five walks in 16 games.
David Murphy | Cleveland Indians | Baylor, 2001-03
Murphy is hitting .333 for the Cleveland Indians in 2015 over 73 games with 58 hits, 12 doubles, one triple, five homers, 26 RBI and 13 walks. The 2015 campaign marks Murphy’s 10th MLB season and second straight with Cleveland.
