Baylor Weekend Volleyball Preview

Baylor volleyball head coach Ryan McGuyre knows that certain things take time, and the team is trying to develop a consistent rhythm on the court. The Bears have another chance to prove themselves when they host the 2015 Baylor Classic this weekend at the Ferrell Center.
Much like the season-opening tournament at Colorado State, the Bears went 2-1 at last week's Dayton Invitational in Dayton, Ohio. But it wasn't the home-standing Flyers that handed Baylor its only loss -- the Bears pulled out a 3-2 win Friday over the 2014 NCAA Tournament team. They followed that up, though, with a 3-1 loss to Cleveland State the next morning.
"It was good that we went into Dayton and played in a hostile atmosphere," McGuyre said. "I like how we responded after losing the first set. I'm definitely disappointed in our energy and our effort in the early morning match the next day. We did some things OK, but we really handed it over to them. It's good to learn it now so it isn't something that hits us mid-conference."
Baylor defeated Eastern Illinois in a tight four-set match Saturday night to end the tournament on a good note, finishing as runners up. Freshman right-side hitter Shelly Fanning and sophomore outside hitter Katie Staiger combined for 79 kills and were named to the all-tournament team.
"It was a fun experience, and it was good to be able to play in a loud gym and alongside my teammates," Fanning said. "I have great teammates to back me up and upperclassmen to hold me under their wing."
Just like the rest of their schedule, the Bears are not taking any opponent lightly. Baylor's next three opponents this weekend come in with a combined record of 24-11 with two of them having three losses or less.
Baylor faces in-state opponent Stephen F. Austin (6-6) at 7 p.m. Friday. While the Ladyjacks have had an up-and-down season, McGuyre wants the team to treat every match the same.
"(The tournament will) be good, I think it'll be very similar to our previous tournament where we can't take any match for granted," he said. "It also gives us the opportunity to focus on some things on our side that we still need to improve on."
The Bears play their next two opponents on Saturday, facing UNC Greensboro (10-2) at 10 a.m. and in-state rival Rice (8-3) at 7 p.m.
"I'm looking forward to going 3-0. I think that's realistic," Fanning said. "That's our goal; we want to be undefeated at home. It's going to take a lot of hard work and determination. We're going to have to be good at the net, and stop balls."
Being at home is a privilege for McGuyre's team, and the goal of staying undefeated at the Ferrell Center will be put to the test this weekend. With no Baylor football game scheduled for Saturday, the Bears won't have to share the spotlight.
"It's a great team to watch. The enthusiasm these girls bring is contagious," McGuyre said. "It's an exciting sport, and you have the poetry of the team game with it. If you come, you're going to return. We want the wins, and with that the crowds will come."
