JACK TRICE STADIUM - AMES, IOWA
OCT. 1, 2016 - ATTENDANCE: 50,842 BAYLOR HEAD COACH Jim Grobe
Opening statement:
"Let me just start out, I would like to say how impressed I am with Matt Campbell and the Iowa State kids and coaching staff. What a great, great plan they had coming in. In the first quarter they had us struggling on both sides of the ball. I thought offensively with their motions and their trades and the things they did that kept us off-balance. I can't say enough about how hard their kids played today. This is one of those games where I'm absolutely tickled to death to win, but my heart goes out to those guys because I don't think they could have played any harder today. I watched them on film and I tried to tell our players, from their first game to their fourth game, you could see improvement every week. You could just see them get better and better and I think going forward, they've got the right guy here and they're going to be a force to reckon with. As much as anything, I'm just proud of our football team."
On defense clicking in the fourth quarter:
"I think a little momentum. That helped us. We did this last week, where we got into the fourth quarter and the defense seemed pretty fresh and our guys were still ready to play. This is not really a defensive plan to let the offense wear down by being out there too much, but I really just felt like at the end we got a little bit of momentum. The offense was playing really well and all of a sudden our guys saw, `Hey, we might be able to get this thing done.'"
On Shock Linwood:
"I told Shock back in the hallway that this is the Shock Linwood that everybody told me about. This is the guy that everybody was talking about and we didn't really see that guy early. He got challenged when he didn't play a lot last week, and he had a great week of practice. That's typically what happens: You practice well, you play well. I was just happy for him."
IOWA STATE HEAD COACH MATT CAMPBELL
Opening statement:
"Obviously, let me first and foremost give credit to Baylor. I thought their kids really out-lasted us. They made some plays when they needed to and ... I certainly give credit to them. I am really proud of our kids. I thought out attitude and effort for 60 minutes was outstanding. Obviously our detail and making those plays down the stretch that are critical to win a game like that, we just didn't do. That's disappointing, but obviously it's part of growing and we have to see it, we have to understand it and we have to continue to move forward."
On offense slowing down in the fourth quarter:
"I don't know what changed or what happened. I just think a couple guys had chances to make plays and we just didn't make them, right? You know, that's where we've got to make those plays to win games like that and to be able to sustain that kind of momentum and success and whether it was a mental error or a physical error, those are things you can't do and those are things we did really well for -- like you said -- for three quarters. We'll evaluate what that looks like and feels like, but [we] had our chances for sure offensively to really extend the game and give ourselves a chance to stay ahead of the scoreboard."
On if he anticipated playing both quarterbacks today:
"Oh absolutely. Just a situation where Joel [Lanning] got into a great rhythm and I didn't feel like that was-- again, Joel's earned the right to be the starting quarterback. We wanted to definitely play both guys. We got into a really good rhythm in the game and just didn't feel like it was fair to pull him out at the time. [It's] nothing that Jacob [Park] did. You'll continue to see enough of Jacob Park and Jacob does a great job, but Joel played really well and gave us great chances to win the football game."
