THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor baseball earned a 6-3 win over San Diego at the Baylor Baseball Battle on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (7-8) used a four-run sixth inning to overcome a 3-1 Toreros (9-8) deficit.
USD struck first with a two-out error that turned into two runs in the third after a triple by Jeff Houghtby and single by Jerod Smith. Baylor countered in the fourth with help from an error as well. Darryn Sheppard led off with a double and scored on an error at first base to cut the USD lead to 2-1.
After a solo home run by San Diego's Ryan Kirby in the sixth, the Bears rallied for a huge bottom half of the inning. Kameron Esthay started it with a leadoff double and scored on an Aaron Dodson single. Following a pitching change, Cameron Miller walked, Steven McLean was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Josh Bissonette hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. With Ben Carl up, two wild pitches allowed a run to score, and after Carl walked, a Cunningham sac fly put the Bears ahead 5-3.
Baylor added an insurance run in the eighth as Miller lead off with a double, moved to second on a sac bunt by McLean and scored on another sac fly by Bissonette.
BU reliever Kody Hessemer (1-0) earned the win, giving up one run on three hits in two innings. Troy Montemayor picked up the save, throwing a perfect ninth with one strikeout. USD reliever Wes Judish (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on one walk in 0.1 innings.
