THE RUNDOWN
The top-ranked and defending national champion Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling (3-0) defeated No. 7 Alderson Broaddus 271.960-260.660 at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas, Sunday afternoon.
The Bears started off the meet strong winning the compulsory event, 36.55-35.00. Baylor continued to lead Alderson Broaddus following the acro event, 65.15-63.40. Going into the half, the Bears and the Battlers tied in the pyramid event but Baylor held on to the lead 94.650-92.900.
After the half, Baylor came out strong in the toss event 123.850-121.100. In the tumbling event, the Bears dominated the Battlers 179.300-170.700.
In the final event of the meet, the team event, the Bears finished strong defeating the Battlers 271.960-260.660.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Kiara Nowlin had another strong effort in her aerial pass, scoring a 9.90 out of 10.
- In heat one of the pyramid event, the team of Shayla Kelley, Shayla Moore, Amanda Graceffa, Kelci Ortiz, Molly Gibbons, Courtney Pate, Miranda Girouard and Alyson Johnson scored a perfect 10.
- In the toss heat of the compulsory event, the team of Kiara Nowlin, Lauren Sturm, Allie Alaman, Ceara Gray, Sydney Evans, Toni Bronisevsky, Jena Fisher, Kaelyn Cowan, Kelci Ortiz, Amanda Graceffa and Shayla Kelley scored a 9.85 out of 10.
- Lauren Sturm tumbled her way to a 9.60 out of 10 in the tumbling open pass event.
STAT OF THE DAY
Baylor nailed the tumbling event scoring 55.450 points to Alderson Broaddus' 49.600.
TOP QUOTE
"Definitely not our best showing," said head coach Felecia Mulkey. "During the team event we had some errors we don't usually make but I think those were one-time things. Usually with those errors you will make them once and they won't happen again, but it just wasn't our strongest showing. We improved a lot of things this week, but I thought there was a lack of focus, which is something we are going to work on."
