Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team

WACO, Texas - Baylor had a school-record and league-high 56 student-athletes named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team, the league announced Thursday. The list honors conference competitors who are new, incoming freshmen at their respective league institutions.

For the fourth straight year, the Bears had over 40 selections, joining Texas as the only other Big 12 school to do so since the honor started in the 2012-13 school year. BU's 193 all-time honorees ranks third in the league behind Texas (236) and Oklahoma (218). This year, BU led the way with 56 choices, followed by Oklahoma (55), TCU (52) and Texas (52) as a total of 445 student-athletes were honored.

Of the league's 39 student-athletes with a 4.00 GPA, Baylor had three in men's tennis' Jimmy Bendeck and track's Sean McCullough and Tammy McVickar. The breakdown for the Bears' honorees by sport is as follows: acrobatics & tumbling (9), baseball (2), women's basketball (3), men's basketball (2), equestrian (9), football (1), men's golf (2), soccer (6), softball (2), men's tennis (2), women's tennis (2), men's track (6), women's track (8) and volleyball (2).

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.

Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team's scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport's entire NCAA Championship segment. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team was introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
