NEW HAVEN, Conn. ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor senior quarterback Seth Russell was one of 40 players chosen to the 2016 Walter Camp Player of the Year award "players to watch," the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Friday.
Russell was the starting QB for BU through the first seven games of 2015 before suffering a season-ending injury. In his first season as the starter, Russell racked up 2,104 yards, 29 TDs and six picks on 119-200 passing and 402 yards and six TDs on 49 rushes. He was named honorable mention All-Big 12 by the league coaches and a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award. Russell ranked 15th nationally and fourth in the Big 12 with 29 passing TDs in just seven games. He broke the single-season school record with 10.06 total offense yards per play.
On Thursday, Russell was selected to the 2016 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list, and was named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list on Wednesday. Last week, he was one of three Bears on the watch list for the Maxwell Award.
Russell's inclusion on the Walter Camp preseason watch list marks the fourth straight season that Baylor has had a player on the list (Lache Seastrunk in 2013, Bryce Petty in 2014, Shawn Oakman in 2015). The senior is one of 15 QBs on the list and one of four representing the Big 12.
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2016 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 128 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN's SportsCenter on Thursday, December 8. The winner will receive his trophy at the Foundation's 50th annual national awards banquet on January 14, 2017 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven, Connecticut.
Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. A former Yale University athlete and football coach; Camp is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation - a New Haven-based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
