May 9, 2017 INDIANAPOLIS - Baylor men's tennis sophomore Johannes Schretter will join teammates Juan Benitez and Max Tchoutakian in the NCAA Singles Championship, the NCAA announced Tuesday.
Last Wednesday, Schretter was listed as the second alternate to the 64-man singles bracket when it was originally released by the NCAA, but due to other players removing themselves from the draw Schretter is no longer on the outside looking in
Benitez, Tchoutakian and Schretter will open play starting May 24 in Athens, Ga. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, following the conclusion of the team championship. All matches will be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a 7-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches. Meanwhile in doubles, Benitez will partner with Will Little to play in that draw.
This season, Schretter is 20-3 overall and 19-3 in dual-match singles play. He is 7-2 against ranked foes with victories over the then No. 42, No. 82 and No. 84 ranked players in the country. At one point in the middle of the season, Schretter won nine-straight singles decisions. In the latest ITA singles rankings, Schretter is ranked No. 63 in the nation.
The seventh-ranked Baylor men open NCAA Team Championship action Friday by taking on Lamar at 1 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
