Bears clinch spot in championship match with 4-2 victory
THE RUNDOWN
HOCKLEY, Texas – Baylor men's golf defeated Iowa State, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Tournament. With the win, Baylor improved to 3-0 in pool play and clinched a spot in Sunday afternoon's championship match at Golf Club of Houston Oaks.
The Bears secured the top spot in Pool B, regardless of the outcome in Sunday morning's match against Kansas State. Only Texas can match the nine points Baylor has scored with three wins, and the Bears own the tiebreaker after defeating Texas in the first match on Friday morning.
BU will face the winner of Sunday morning's match between Oklahoma State (2-0-1) and Kansas (2-0-1). The Bears first face K-State at 8 a.m. CT, and the championship match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Cooper Dossey got the Bears on the board early with a 6&5 victory over Iowa State's Jackson Katz. Dossey was 2-up thru six holes after winning the second and fifth holes, and he put the match away by winning five consecutive holes from the seventh through 11th. Katz cut the lead to 6-up by winning the 12th hole, but Dossey clinched the match by halving the 13th hole.
ISU responded by winning the next two completed matches to move in front 2-1. Frank Lindwall defeated Braden Bailey 5&4, and Lachlan Barker knocked off Garrett May 3&2. Bailey was 1-down thru eight holes, but Lindwall won the ninth, 10th, 12th and 14th to clinch the win. May was 1-down thru 10, but Barker didn't drop any holes the rest of the way and clinched the match by winning the 16th hole.
Needing to win two of the final three matches and halve the other to earn the win over the Cyclones, the Bears rebounded to win all three. Colin Kober and Ryan Grider posted matching 2&1 victories in their respective matches against ISU's Tripp Kinney and Sam Vincent.
Kober was 2-down thru five holes, but he won the seventh and 11th to bring the match all-square. Kinney won the 12th to go back in front, and Kober bounced back to win the 14th and 15th to go in front 1-up, and he clinched the match by winning the 17th to go 2-up with one to play.
Grider and Vincent traded on the first eight holes, and Grider took the lead by winning the 12th hole. Vincent brought it back all-square with a win on the 15th hole, but Grider responded by winning the 16th and 17th to earn the win with a 2-up lead and only one hole to play.
Mark Reppe punctuated the Baylor victory by winning his match 1-up against ISU's Ricky Costello. Reppe needed to halve the match to secure the Baylor win, and he clinched that victory by going 1-up with one hole to play before winning the final hole to finish with a 2-up win. Reppe never trailed after winning the third hole. Costello brought it back all-square by winning the fourth, but Reppe took a lead he wouldn't relinquish by winning the sixth hole. Reppe extended the lead to 2-up three times, and Costello cut it to 1-up each time before Reppe finished off the 2-up victory by winning the final hole.
