
No. 4 EQ Drops Top-10 Contests at Fresno Invitational

Bears fall to No. 5 South Carolina and No. 10 Fresno State
THE RUNDOWN
FRESNO, Calif. – No. 4 Baylor equestrian (4-3, 1-1 Big 12) dropped two top-10 contests to close out play at the Fresno State Invitational Saturday at the Student Horse Center in Fresno, Calif.
Up 5-3 after the first half of competition against No. 5 South Carolina, the Bears were edged by the Gamecocks in raw scores after tying 8-8 (1139.5-1114.0).
Then, the Bears dropped a 10-8 decision to host and 10th-ranked Fresno State in the final meet of the tournament.
SOUTH CAROLINA 8 (1139.5), BAYLOR 8 (1114.0)
In the final western event, Baylor and South Carolina split 2-2 at reining. Madaline Callaway topped Caroline Gute, 71-66.5, on Tito. Then, Carly Salter defeated Madison Thiel, 72.5-71.0, on Noodle.
South Carolina tied up and eventually won the meet with a 3-1 victory in equitation over fences. Baylor's lone point came from Michelle Mallett, scoring an 85-82 win over Tyler Petrie on Charlie.
She and horsemanship rider Abbi Demel earned MOP honors for the Bears.
FRESNO STATE 10, BAYLOR 8
Starting out with fences, the Bulldogs struck first with a 4-1 lead. Shannon Hogue outscored Hana Beiling, 75-68, on EZ for the lone point in the event.
Baylor continued to fall behind after Fresno State took horsemanship, 3-1. Kaylee Mellott put the Bears on the board with a 74-73 victory over Kameron Thorn on Ringo.
The Bears then posted a dominant 5-0 performance in equitation on the flat. Grace Thiel took a 76-60 win on Q, followed by a 75-70 victory for Shannon Hogue on Satin.
Caroline Weaver defeated her opponent 71-70 on Otis, followed by a 78-69 triumph for Madison Day and an 81-59 victory for Rachael Davis on Blue.
Davis scored the team's lone MOP honor in flat.
Fresno State wrapped up the meet with a 3-1 win in reining. Maggie Cincotta gave BU a point with a 73-72 victory over Paige Barton on Cooper.
