Bears finished in seventh place in the women’s 6K and 20th in the men’s 10K.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Baylor finished in seventh place as a team in the women's 6,000-meter race, and the men's team finished 20th in the 10,000-meter race Friday on a rainy morning at the 2018 NCAA South Central Region Championship.
Junior Alison Andrews-Paul held a top-20 pace for the majority of the race before finishing 33rd to lead the Bears with a 6K time of 21:49.2.
"It's a delicate balance taking a half-miler and getting them through 6K," associate head coach Jon Capron said. "We're just about a half K short on Alison's prep for that race, and that's a little bit my responsibility. She poured her heart out on that course today, so I'm really proud of her effort. We learned that she has a lot of tools to be better at that, and she's going to continue to get better. That whole race, she was right where she needed to be."
Brooke Gilmore (48th), Sarah Antrich (51st), Lindsay Walton (57th), and Celia Holmes (72nd) were the remaining scoring runners for Baylor, which ended the season on a positive note heading into 2019.
"I was really proud of the ladies' effort," Capron said. "They really went after it and gave it everything. Lindsay had a great day, Sarah was able to step up and I really wanted that for her. Celia held her own, as did Brooke. Haley (Everroad) did well. Top to bottom, the girls ran pretty solid. I'm happy to get the girls something to move forward from to kind of hang our hats on for a little bit. Even though we're not even near satisfied."
On the men's side, Connor Laktasic once again led the way with a 70th-place finish for the Bears. His 10K time of 33:47.1 was followed by TJ Sugg, Ryan Day, Henry Huff and Matt Henderson to complete the team scoring.
"That was a tough course to run a 10K on," Capron said. "It really did affect a lot of things. But they are better than that, and we need to prepare better than that. That's a big part of it. We're going to go back to the drawing board. We're having a meeting next week. We're going to talk about what it takes and what we need to do to get there."
With the cross country season complete, Baylor's focus turns to the upcoming indoor track & field season. The Bears open up back in College Station with the Ted Nelson Invitational Saturday, Jan. 12.
