
Men's Tennis Outlasts Washington, 4-1

SEATTLE - 12th-seeded Baylor men's tennis (7-3) closed out its ITA National Team Indoor Championship run with a 4-1 victory over 16th-seeded and host Washington Sunday night at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Bears move to 4-1 all-time against the Huskies (6-4) and improve to 23-23 all-time at the ITA national event. BU has won at least one match at the 16-team site for the fourth consecutive appearance.
BU was tested early in doubles action as junior Jimmy Bendeck and freshman Matias Soto suffered a 6-3 defeat to Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart at the No. 2 spot. Junior Johannes Schretter partnered with sophomore Constantin Frantzen at the top of the lineup, and the duo secured a 6-4 win over Enzo Sommer and Kawika Lam to knot up doubles play.
For the third consecutive match, the doubles point came down to court three in Seattle. Sven Lah and Roy Smith pulled through as the freshman duo defeated Jake Douglas and Alexis Alvarez, 7-6(5), to give BU the 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, Roy Smith bounced back from yesterday's loss with a dominant 6-3, 6-3 win over Amit Batta on court four for the 2-0 Baylor lead.
Washington secured its only point of the match after No. 24 Johannes Schretter dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Mitch Stewart at the No. 2 spot.
With all four remaining singles matches in the third set, Jimmy Bendeck provided a point with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Seb Hawkin on court six to put BU on the brink of victory. Freshman Matias Soto ended the match as he took down Enzo Sommer, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot for the 4-1 win.
No. 64 Bjoern Petersen trailed 6-4, 6-7(3), 2-1 against No. 48 Jake Douglas while Constantin Frantzen led Piers Foley, 7-6(4), 3-6, 4-3 before each match was abandoned.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Bears are 8-2 in the doubles point this season and improve to 7-1 when winning the doubles point.
- Freshmen Roy Smith bounced back from his first loss of the season for the first singles win of the night on court four. He improves to 6-1 in dual-match play.
- Matias Soto improved to 6-0 in dual-match singles play with Sunday's win and finished 3-0 in Seattle.
- The freshman duo of Roy Smith and Sven Lah clinched the doubles point for the second consecutive match, winning 7-6(5) on court three.
- Smith and Lah improve to 5-0 as a doubles tandem this season.
- Baylor improves to 4-1 all-time against Washington and 4-0 under head coach Matt Knoll.
- Baylor has won at least one ITA National Indoor match in four consecutive appearances.

The Bears return home to host Abilene Christian in a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. (CT) at the Hurd Tennis Center.
