THE RUNDOWN
PALM CITY, Fla. - Baylor men's golf is in fourth place after shooting even-par 284 in Sunday's first round of the Valspar Collegiate at Floridian National Golf Club. The Bears are seven shots back of the lead with 36 holes remaining.
No. 9-ranked Baylor (E) trails only No. 1 Oklahoma State (-7), No. 2 Texas A&M (-3) and No. 22 Wake Forest (-1). The Bears lead No. 37 Duke (+2), No. 23 Florida State (+2), No. 3 Georgia Tech (+3), No. 12 LSU (+3), No. 16 Arkansas (+4), No. 20 South Florida (+5), No. 28 Pepperdine (+8), No. 31 South Carolina (+9), No. 14 Texas (+10), Houston (+12), Lamar (+17) and UT Arlington (+18).
Matthew Perrine turned in the Bears' best round of the day with a 4-under 67 to sit in a tie for second place in the 90-player field, one shot back of Wake Forest's Parker Gillam (-5). Perrine began on No. 9 and was 1-under through 14 holes, but he made a birdie No. 5 and an eagle on the par-5, 577-yard seventh hole to move to 4-under before finishing with a par on No. 8.
Garrett May carded an even-par 71 to finish the day in a tie for 15th place. Braden Bailey started the day 2-over through his first nine holes, but he made a birdie on his 10th hole and finished with eight consecutive pars to record a 1-over 72, which has him in a tie for 25th place. Ryan Grider recorded Baylor's final counting score with a 3-over 74, which has him tied for 49th place, and Travis McInroe shot 7-over 78 to sit in a tie for 78th place.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Baylor leads the 16-team field in par-3 scoring at 2-under 2.92, ranks tied for fifth in par-5 scoring at 2-under 4.90 and is 10th in par-4 scoring at 11-over 4.24.
- Baylor's 55 pars were second-most in the tournament's first round behind only LSU with 62.
- Garrett May and Ryan Grider are tied for the tournament lead in par-3 scoring at 2-under 2.60.
- Matthew Perrine is tied for the lead in par-5 scoring at 4-under 4.00, and he is tied for fourth in par-4 scoring at 1-under 3.89.
- Braden Bailey is tied for the tournament lead with 15 pars and tied for 14th in par-4 scoring at even-par 4.00.
- Perrine posted a team-best four birdies, which tied for 16th-most in the field.
- Perrine was one of two golfers in the 90-player field to make eagle on the 577-yard, par-5 seventh hole, and he was one of only six golfers to make an eagle at any point in the first round.
STAT OF THE DAY
67 - Matthew Perrine shot 4-under 67 for the second time in his last three rounds. He also posted a 4-under 67 in the second round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. Perrine's 67 on Sunday included an eagle, four birdies, 11 pars and two bogeys.
