Men's Golf Climbs to Second at Valspar Collegiate

THE RUNDOWN
PALM CITY, Fla. - Baylor men's golf climbed two spots into second place after shooting 5-under-par 279 in Monday's second round of the Valspar Collegiate. The Bears are 12 shots back of the lead at 5-under 563 heading to Tuesday's final round at Floridian National Golf Club.
No. 9 Baylor (-5) trails only No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State (-17). The Bears entered the day in fourth place, but they moved in front of No. 2 Texas A&M (-4) and No. 22 Wake Forest (+12). Baylor also leads No. 23 Florida State (-4), No. 12 LSU (-2), No. 37 Duke (E), No. 3 Georgia Tech (+1), No. 20 South Florida (+1), No. 14 Texas (+4), No. 28 Pepperdine (+10), Houston (+11), No. 16 Arkansas (+13), No. 31 South Carolina (+17), UT Arlington (+26) and Lamar (+40).
Senior Matthew Perrine posted his second straight round of 4-under 67, which has him in second place at 8-under 134 and two shots back of the leader, Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland (-10). Perrine has shot 67 in three of his last four rounds, trimming nearly half a stroke off his season average from 71.16 to 70.74 over those four rounds. He began Monday's round from No. 4 and started with a bogey, but he got back to even-par with a birdie on No. 7, and he shot 5-under 31 on the back-nine.
Junior Garrett May carded a 3-under 68 to move into a tie for eighth place in the 90-player field at 3-under 139. He sank four birdies on a seven-hole stretch starting with No. 7 to get to 3-under on the day, and he will enter the final round in position to record a fifth consecutive top-10 finish. May is currently 10th on Baylor's all-time list with 10 top-10 finishes over his three-year career.
Freshman Ryan Grider improved five strokes from his first round by carding a 2-under 69 to move into a tie for 25th place at 1-over 143. Grider's 69 tied his best round of the season, which he's now recorded three times, and it was his third round at par or better in his last seven rounds played.
Junior Braden Bailey recorded BU's final counting score with a 4-over 75 to move into a tie for 53rd place at 5-over 147. He made four birdies and was 2-under through 13 holes in the second round, but went 6-over the rest of the way. Redshirt freshman Travis McInroe shot 13-over 84 and is in 87th place at 20-over 162.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Baylor ranks fourth in the 16-team field in par-3 scoring at 3-over 3.06, fourth in par-5 scoring at 10-under 4.75 and 11th in par-4 scoring at 22-over 4.24.
- The Bears are sixth with 103 pars and 10th with 33 birdies.
- Matthew Perrine is tied for the tournament lead in par-5 scoring at 7-under 4.13 and tied for third in the 90-player field in par-4 scoring at 3-under 3.83.
- Garrett May is tied for the tournament lead in par-3 scoring at 3-under 2.70.
- Ryan Grider is tied for ninth in par-3 scoring at 1-under 2.90.
- May and Grider are tied for 20th in par-5 scoring at 2-under 4.75.
- Perrine's 10 birdies are tied for fourth-most in the field.
- May leads the team and is tied for 18th overall with 23 pars across 36 holes.
- Perrine was one of only four players to birdie the 493-yard, par-4 18th hole in Monday's second round. The 18th played as the toughest hole of the day with an average score to par of +0.49.
