Men's Golf Ties for Fifth at Valspar Collegiate

THE RUNDOWN
PALM CITY, Fla. - Baylor men's golf finished in a tie for fifth place with a 54-hole total of 2-over-par 854 at the Valspar Collegiate. The Bears carded 7-over 291 in Tuesday's final round at Floridian National Golf Club.
The Bears finished behind four teams, three of which are the nation's top-three ranked programs. No. 9 Baylor (+2) tied with No. 37 Duke (+2) and finished behind No. 1 Oklahoma State (-12), No. 23 Florida State (-7), No. 2 Texas A&M (-2) and No. 3 Georgia Tech (E).
BU recorded head-to-head victories over seven top-35 ranked teams. The Bears defeated No. 12 LSU (+6), No. 20 South Florida (+9), No. 14 Texas (+10), Houston (+13), No. 16 Arkansas (+13), No. 22 Wake Forest (+26), No. 31 South Carolina (+29), No. 28 Pepperdine (+31), UT Arlington (+46) and Lamar (+74).
Garrett May posted the Bears' best round on Tuesday with an even-par 71, moving him into a tie for seventh place at 3-under 210, which was his fifth consecutive top-10 finish. It was May's fifth straight round at par or better, and he's carded 72 or better in 11 consecutive rounds and 19 of 21 rounds this season. May had a team-high six birdies and added an eagle in the final round. His current 69.90 season stroke average is on pace to break Baylor's single-season record set by Kyle Jones at 70.47 in 2014-15.
Matthew Perrine tied for third place at 7-under 206 after shooting 1-over 72 in the final round. The third-place finish was Perrine's best of the season, his fourth career top-three finish and his third top-five of the season, giving him seven career top-five finishes. He's finished below par in five of eight events this season and ranks third on the team with 13 of 24 rounds at par or better and a 70.79 stroke average.
Braden Bailey shot 4-over 75 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 55th place at 9-over 222. He remains second on the team with 14 of 21 rounds at par or better, despite shooting par or better in two of his last nine rounds. Bailey's 71.04 stroke average this season ranks fourth on the team, and his 71.89 career stroke average is fourth-best in program history, trailing only Cooper Dossey (71.00), Jimmy Walker (71.55) and Perrine (71.84). May ranks eighth with a 71.99 career stroke average.
Travis McInroe posted Baylor's final counting score on Tuesday with a 2-over 73. He made five birdies in the final round and finished tied for 83rd place at 22-over 235. Ryan Grider shot 11-over 82 in the final round to finish tied for 63rd place at 12-over 225.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Matthew Perrine moved into a tie for eighth on Baylor's all-time list with his seventh career top-5 finish, and he tied Braden Bailey for seventh with 15 career top-10 finishes.
- Garrett May recorded his fifth consecutive top-10 finish and moved into a tie for 10th on Baylor's all-time list with 11 career top-10 finishes.
- Baylor finished third in the 16-team field in par-5 scoring at 19-under 4.68, fourth in par-3 scoring at 8-over 3.11 and 13th in par-4 scoring at 44-over 4.33.
- Baylor's 54 birdies were two back of the tournament lead and ranked fourth in the field, but the Bears tied for 15th with 138 pars.
- Perrine tied for the lead in the 90-player field in par-5 scoring at 9-under 4.25, and he tied for seventh in par-4 scoring at even-par 4.00.
- May tied for second in par-3 scoring at 2-under 2.87, and he tied for sixth in par-5 scoring at 5-under 4.58.
- Ryan Grider tied for 24th in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.75.
- Perrine and May tied for fourth with 14 birdies over 54 holes.
- May made eagle on the 529-yard, par-5 13th hole, one of nine eagles made on the hole out of 270 attempts during the tournament.
STAT OF THE DAY
7 - Garrett May played seven holes below par in the final round, which tied for the tournament lead with Florida State's John Pak (seven birdies). May recorded a team-high six birdies and added an eagle as part of his even-par 71 round. He made birdies on Nos. 4, 6, 7, 10, 15 and 17 and an eagle on No. 13.

"This golf course was really tough today and we got pushed around quite a bit," head coach Mike McGraw said. "Matthew (Perrine) and Garrett (May) were both solid. We have a couple of weeks before our next event, so there is time to make necessary adjustments."

Baylor returns to Waco to prepare for its final two regular season events that run consecutive weeks in April. The Bears play the Aggie Invitational April 7-8 at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas, then head to Tempe, Ariz. for the ASU Invitational, which runs April 14-15 at the ASU Karsten Golf Club.
