THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - Baylor women's tennis battled its way to a 5-2 victory over ninth-ranked Northwestern, 5-2, at Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center Tuesday night. It is the first Top 10 win since May 15, 2015, and the program's 29th under 16th-year head coach Joey Scrivano.
After falling behind 1-0 when Northwestern won the doubles point, the Bears came fighting back to earn the advantage with consecutive singles victories.
Sophomore Angelina Shakhraichuk turned the tide with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory against Julie Byrne on court six. Fellow sophomore Jessica Hinojosa put her team ahead with another strong win on court four, 6-2, 6-1, over Alex Chatt.
Seconds later, Northwestern evened up the match, 2-2, with a two-set win at No. 1 singles.
With the result on the line, Baylor and Northwestern continued to battle in out in the final three singles slots. Freshman Livia Kraus provided the 3-2 edge, setting up freshman Kristina Sorokolet and sophomore Camilla Abbate for match point.
Both players continued their matches into the third set, before Sorokolet clinched the match with victory, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. The teams elected to play it out on court three and an absolute battle ensued. Abbate earned the win in tiebreak fashion, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2).
