Bears show off depth, potential in 90-minute exhibition
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Baylor soccer locked into a 1-1 draw with Sam Houston State on Friday evening at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field in the lone exhibition match of the 2018 preseason.
The Bears carried wide advantages in shots (26-3), shots on goal (6-1) and corner kicks (15-0).
Despite the large advantages in opportunities, BU's lone goal came in the closing minutes of the first half, spearheaded by some new faces on the Baylor roster.
Taylor Moon cut through the Sam Houston State attacking third and passed up to fellow freshman Maddie Algya, cutting behind the SHSU backline where Algya was able to connect on a strong kick that narrowly missed the score, bouncing off the cross post and bouncing back to senior Kennedy Brown on the right side of the goal box.
Brown was able to punch the ball in for the score, finding the back-left corner of the net to give BU the 1-0 lead in the 44th minute.
In the second half, a breakdown in the BU backline led to a pair of shots for SHSU. The first was punched away by goalkeeper Hannah Parrish, but the ball bounced directly back to Bearkat forward Lindsey Bienski who was able to poke a shot by Parrish for the equalizer goal.
The Bears would take 18 more shots and earn seven corners, but the Bearkats kept BU out of the net and the exhibition ended in a draw.
NOTES
* The Bears kept a steady stream of substitutions and line changes, playing a total of 18 student-athletes in the contest.
* Some new faces played a significant impact in the match for BU, with Danielle Hayden, Kayley Ables, Sarah Norman, Taylor Moon, Maddie Algya and Giuliana Cunningham all dressing out for the Bears and seeing substantial playing time.
* Jackie Crowther and Hannah Parrish both hit the field for BU for the first time since suffering season-ending injuries in 2017. Parrish played all 90 minutes in goal and Crowther logged 11 minutes at the forward position, starting off both periods on the attack.
* Sarah King and Julie James both logged the full 90 minutes, while freshman Kayley Ables (85) and junior Raegan Padgett (82) both totaled 80-plus minutes of action.
