Baylor Bear Insider
Much has changed in the 42 days since the Baylor Bears knocked off a top-20 Iowa State team, 73-70, on Jan. 8 at the Ferrell Center.
In Baylor's second Big 12 game of the year, starters Tristan Clark, Makai Mason, Mario Kegler and King McClure all played 30-plus minutes and accounted for 54 points. When the two teams reconnect with an 8 p.m. game Tuesday in Ames, Iowa, Kegler is the only sure thing for the Bears (16-9, 7-5) against the No. 22/23 Cyclones (19-6, 8-4).
That turned out to be Clark's last game of the season. He's out for the rest of the year with a knee injury. McClure has missed the last three games with a knee injury, while Mason has sat out two of the last three with a bruised toe on his right foot.
"The good news is they're getting better," coach Scott Drew said. "The bad news is I can't tell you anything definite."
Freshman point guard Jared Butler, who had just two points and two assists in the first meeting with the Cyclones, said "it seems like an eternity."
"That really does let you know it was a long time ago," said Butler, who had 16 points in Saturday's 86-61 loss at Texas Tech. "When we watched the film from that game, it was fun to watch. We were all locked-in. We had just lost to TCU and we needed a big win at home. It was a great game, so I'm looking forward to this one, too."
While the day-to-day uncertainty of whether Mason or McClure will be available has been tough on the Bears, at least they're "more prepared that they're not going to play," Butler said.
"I don't think we're used to it, but I don't think it's a shock when King or Makai aren't playing. It's not like (gasp). I would say it's a little bit less of an adjustment. It's not like we've got to put in a totally different offense now that they're not playing."
After playing just one game in his last two years at Yale because of a broken foot, and sitting out five games this season with toe and ankle injuries, "Dr. Mason has probably got a minor in medical treatments," Drew said.
"The good news is he also knows what's something that prevents him from playing and what's something that's just painful," Drew said of Mason, who's averaging a team-high 15.6 points and 3.3 assists. "We're trying to cut down on as much pain as possible. This time of year, everybody's going to be banged-up in some form or fashion. It really comes down to as long as you're not going to hurt it worse, it's what you can endure. The good news is that each and every day he gets better."
Playing without the senior backcourt duo on Saturday, the Bears shot just 35 percent and turned it over 19 times in their worst loss in the Tech series in 17 years.
Although Baylor ended up winning the battle of the boards, 34-30, Tech had eight more second-chance points (22-14) on 13 offensive rebounds and turned the Bears' 19 turnovers into 25 points.
Sophomore forward Mark Vital said the Bears "should play tougher" against an Iowa State team that has four guards in its starting lineup.
"This is a different squad, so everybody's got to fill in a place," Vital said. "We've got a little lineup, we're going to have to play fast. And I like that. And we're real tough. We might be small, but I think we're real tough. We can handle it."
Since back-to-back losses to Baylor and Kansas State, the Cyclones have won seven of their last nine going into Tuesday's game and knocked off league-leading K-State, 78-64, on the road Saturday in Manhattan. Iowa State is in a virtual tie for second place with Kansas and Texas Tech and just 1 ½ games behind the Wildcats (20-6, 10-3).
Four players are averaging double-digit points, led by 6-6 Virginia transfer Marial Shayok with 19.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Lindell Wigginton (13.3), freshman Talen Horton-Tucker (12.6) and 6-9 Nebraska transfer Michael Jackson (12.0 ppg, 6.0 rebounds) are also averaging double figures, while fifth-year senior and former Arkansas transfer) Nick Weiler-Babb contributes 9.6 points and a team-high 4.1 assists per game.
"Offensively, everyone knows how talented they are and how capable they are," Drew said. "Unfortunately, you can play really good defense and they can still score. You just want to control what you can control and make them as tough as possible. We know they're going to score, but you want to make sure they're not getting easy looks. They're really good in transition, especially at their place when the crowd gets involved. We've got to take care of the basketball and get back on defense."
Tuesday's game is broadcast by ESPN2, with Jon Sciambi and former NBA head coach Stan Van Gundy calling the action.
Baylor returns home for its next two games, hosting West Virginia (10-16, 2-11) at 1 p.m. Saturday and then Texas (15-11, 7-6) at 8 p.m. next Wednesday, Feb. 27.
