Bears' senior right-handed pitcher had a 23-12 record in the circle last season
WACO, Texas – Baylor senior right-handed pitcher Gia Rodoni will sit out and redshirt the 2019 season, announced by 19th-year head coach Glenn Moore Tuesday afternoon.
"Gia had knee surgery in the off season and has not progressed to the point where we feel comfortable with her competing this season," Moore said. "Fortunately, a full recovery is expected so she will look to return for a fifth-year next season."
The 2018 NFCA All-Central Region selection made 42 appearances with 34 starts in the circle last season, posting eight shutouts and two no-hitters. Her 268 strikeouts on the season led the Big 12 and ranked 13th in the country.
Rodoni worked a 2.32 ERA with a 23-12 record, holding opposing hitters to a .215 batting average over 223.2 innings of work. The six-time Big 12 Pitcher of the Week in 2018 helped lead the Lady Bears to their eighth straight NCAA Regional.
The Lady Bears open the 2019 campaign by competing in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, running Feb. 7-10 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. BU opens against No. 9 South Carolina and will then challenge BYU, North Carolina, Liberty and No. 3 Washington.
