Bears kickoff 2019-20 with several wins on the singles court
MIDLAND, Texas - Kristina Sorokolet breezed through the first four matches of the ITA Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in MIdland over the weekend but fell short in the finals, falling to Texas Tech's Olivia Peet, 6-3, 4-3 Sunday. Sorokolet, along with teammates Paula Barañano and Anastasia Kharitonova combined for 11 wins on the singles court in the three-day event.
Sorokolet's run resulted in two-set victories in each of the first three rounds before she edged her teammate, Barañano, in the semifinals in three sets. Overall, Sorokolet finished 4-1 on the weekend and improved to 14-4 all-time in fall competition at Baylor.
Barañano picked up her 10th overall victory on the singles court with her second win Friday. She went on to pick up No. 11 in the quarterfinals round before falling to Sorokolet in the semifinals.
Kharitonova had three wins of her own and fell to the eventual champion, Peet, in the semifinals in a three-set heartbreaker, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
"Kris definitely didn't perform at her best and that had a lot to do with her needing to overcoming herself. It's not easy to focus on the task at hand and think about a result," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "It's something she is working on and is making progress. Overall, she had a great tournament and made positive steps forward. I'm confident she will learn from this match and be a better competitor in her next event."
Baylor will play host to the H-E-B Invitational Oct. 4-6 while Livia Kraus and Jessica Hinojosa will be headed to Tulsa, Okla. for the ITA All-American Tournament that weekend.
