Student-Athletes from Women’s Basketball, Acrobatics & Tumbling, Baseball and Track & Field selected as September Champions of the Month.
WACO, Texas – Queen Egbo (women's basketball), Hannah Schumacher (A&T), Daniel Caruso (baseball) and J.B. Sandlund (men's track & field) have been selected as the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE) September Champions of the Month.
This award recognizes student-athletes who achieve their personal bests in the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth.
Each of these student-athletes was nominated by a SACE team member based upon their embodiment of the four pillars.
Egbo, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, was a key contributor on the Lady Bears' Big 12 and national championship basketball team, averaging 5.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. She also had a personal-best GPA in the Spring 2019 semester and followed that up by winning a gold medal with USA Basketball at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup this summer in Tokyo, Japan.
"Achieving this goal is something I wish every college athlete could get the chance to accomplish," said Egbo, majoring in health, kinesiology and leisure studies, "and is very important to me because I've worked hard both in school and on the court to get to where I am now."
A senior from Monroe, Wash., Schumacher has shined in the classroom and in the mission fields while battling through multiple injuries and trials over the past few years. She achieved a personal-best 4.0 GPA in Fall 2018 and is working toward applying for nursing school with hopes of being a critical flight nurse.
Part of the last three NCATA national championships with acrobatics & tumbling, Hannah has gone on mission trips to Puerto Rico and Brazil with Baylor Athletics and was also part of mission trips this summer to Uganda and South Africa. "It has been amazing to watch Hannah grow into a strong woman who can overcome any obstacle put in her path," said academic coach Christina Johnson.
Caruso, a fourth-year junior pitcher from Los Angeles, Calif., was a key part of a bullpen that helped baseball finish second in the Big 12 and earn its third-straight NCAA regional berth. Coming off an injury redshirt season, he made 25 relief appearances and was 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA to earn honorable mention All-Big 12 honors.
A marketing major, Daniel is a six-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and has been on the Baylor Dean's List three times. "It's truly an honor to have achieved this accomplishment," he said. "There are so many deserving student-athletes, and it is very humbling to see I was picked. I'm very grateful to have the help from all of my coaches, teammates and advisors, because none of this would be possible without their constant love and support."
Taking advantage of numerous opportunities outside his sport, Sandlund took part in the inaugural Leadership Retreat, has been actively engaged in the Baylor Built character formation programming and serves as Treasurer and Special Events chair for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). This summer, he completed an internship with Jigsaw Medical, LLC back in his home state of Illinois.
In addition to earning second-team Academic All-Big 12 honors in cross country and track last year, he ran personal-best times of 4:02.94 in the 1,500 meters and 4:17.4 in the mile. "Baylor athletes are top-tier in all walks of life," said J.B., a junior from St. Charles, Ill., majoring in entrepreneurship & corporate innovation, "and I'm humbled to get to represent such a diverse group in and out of the classroom."
