Baylor Bear Insider
Much like last week, when they rebounded from a loss to now-No. 1 Kansas, the No. 2 Baylor Bears (25-3, 14-2) will get a chance to bounce back from a frustrating loss to TCU with a "Senior Day" matchup against Texas Tech (18-11, 9-7) at 8 p.m. Monday.
Seniors Freddie Gillespie (9.9 ppg, 9.1 rebounds) and Devonte Bandoo (7.5 ppg) will be honored in a pregame ceremony. The two transfers have helped the Bears compile a two-year record of 45-17 and their highest-ever finish this season in the Big 12.
This is the fourth time this year that Baylor has had the quick two-game turnaround from Saturday to a "Big Monday" matchup, beating Oklahoma, Kansas State and Texas on the back end of those previous swings.
"I think it makes it a little easier," said sophomore guard Jared Butler, who is averaging 15.8 points and 3.2 assists per game. "We're just fortunate enough to get another game. We've just got to win the next game."
No longer in control in the Big 12 championship race, the Bears now trail top-ranked Kansas (26-3, 15-1) by one game with two to play over the next six days. The Jayhawks host TCU on Wednesday and close out on the road at Tech, while Baylor finishes the regular-season with a 12 p.m. CST game on Saturday at West Virginia (19-10, 7-9).
"We need to finish the right way," Baylor coach Scott Drew said. "We've got Senior Night and, obviously, you go to a real tough place in West Virginia, and we've got to go from there."
On Saturday, TCU shot 76 percent in the second half (16-of-21) to overcome a 12-point deficit and upset the Bears, 75-72, in Fort Worth. After scoring just four points in the first half and missing his last eight shots, Desmond Bane came back to drain five 3-pointers and score 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half.
"They shot the 3 pretty well, and that was one of our points of emphasis going into it," Butler said of Baylor's defense giving up 54 second-half points. "In the second half, we just didn't execute the game plan like we said. We didn't want to give them any 3's, and they had too many open looks and too many shots they could make and made them."
It was Baylor's first road loss in conference play (7-1) and first loss in a true road game all year (8-1). In conference-only road games, Baylor and Kansas are a combined 15-1, while the other eight teams are 12-52.
"Normally, what makes the Big 12 so good is it's so hard to win on the road," Drew said. "TCU showed you that today. They've beaten three ranked teams here (Texas Tech, West Virginia and Baylor)."
Tech is just 3-6 in true road games this season and has dropped two games in a row coming into Monday's game, falling 65-51 at Oklahoma and 68-58 at home to Texas.
The Red Raiders, who lost a tight 57-52 game to Baylor nearly two months ago in Lubbock, are led by the backcourt trio of freshman Jahmi'us Ramsey (15.5 ppg), junior Davide Moretti (12.9) and sophomore Kyler Edwards (11.8).
"Their depth makes them really good in short turnarounds," Drew said, "and obviously their motion offense is tough to prepare for, and their defense is one of the best in the nation. You expect nothing less in the Big 12."
The "Big Monday" matchup will be televised by ESPN, with Bob Wischusen, Fran Fraschilla and Holly Rowe calling the action.
