Bears move to 8-1 to start the season
THE RUNDOWN
HOUSTON, Texas. – The No. 19-ranked Baylor women's tennis team took the doubles point and then cruised to a 5-2 victory over Rice Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Baylor (8-1) bounced back from its only loss of the season by taking matches on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts in doubles to secure an early 1-0 advantage. Angie Shakhraichuk had the match-sealing win when her victory on the No. 5 court vs. Rice's Linda Huang, 6-2, 6-4 gave the Bears a 4-0 lead.
Mel Krywoj, Livia Kraus and Paula Barañano all added wins on the singles court and Rice (6-6) needed three sets each to take down the Bears' Anastasia Kharitonova on the No. 2 singles court and Alicia Herrero Linana on the No. 4 court.
Baylor now leads the all-time series with the Owls, 17-13, and the Bears have a 15-match win streak over Rice.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Barañano beat Rice's Diae El Jardi, 6-3, 6-2 to improve to 6-0 on the season, and it marked the 20th overall win on the singles court for the sophomore in her career.
• Shakhraichuk and Barañano teamed up for a 6-3 win in doubles on the No. 2 court, which marked the duo's fourth consecutive win in the spring.
