Bears at ITA Fall Nationals, Big 12 Individuals
WACO, Texas – Baylor women's tennis is taking part in two different tournaments this weekend with Alicia Herrero Linana and Mel Krywoj at the ITA Fall Nationals in San Diego, Calif., and Alina Shcherbinina, Anita Sahdiieva, Brooke Thompson and Olivia Malm at the Big 12 Individuals in Stillwater, Okla.
The ITA Fall Nationals began on Thursday. Herrero dropped her singles match to open the day to the University of San Diego's Abigail Desiatnikov, 7-5, 6-3. However, Herrero finished strong as she and Krywoj defeated Central Oklahoma's Christine Canete and Mae Canete, 6-1, 6-0. The duo will play in the round of 16 on Friday against the winner between USC's Snow Han and Salma Ewing and Penn's Iuliia Bryzgalova and Marija Curnic.
While the seniors are in California, the freshmen get things started in Oklahoma on Friday. Doubles matches are slated to begin in Stillwater at 10 a.m., with singles play starting an hour later.
Shcherbinina and Sahdiieva are the No. 2 seeds for the tournament and have a first-round bye in doubles. Malm and Thompson will face Anna Turco and Manami Ukita of Kansas State on Friday.
In singles, Shcherbinina is slated to take on Oklahoma's Emma Staker, while Sahdiieva will face West Virginia's Camilla Bossi.
Malm and Thompson each received a first-round bye but already have opponents for the next round. Malm will face Kansas State's Florentine Dekkers, while Thompson will play Kansas' Mariana Manyoma Velasquez.
