Pair of doubles teams pick up wins
WACO, Texas – Baylor women's tennis continued its play in San Diego, Calif., at the ITA Fall Nationals as well as at the Big 12 Individuals in Stillwater, Okla., on Friday.
In San Diego, Alicia Herrero Linana and Mel Krywoj ended the day with a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) win over USC's Snow Han and Salma Ewing. The win moves the Bears on to the quarterfinals where they will play the winner between No. 1 seed Wake Forest's Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth and Colorado State's Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic.
Earlier in the day, Herrero Linana battled in her consolation singles match but fell in three sets to South Carolina's Ayana Akli, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. The Baylor senior was down 4-3 in the second set and fought back to force a third set.
In Stillwater, Alina Shcherbinina and Anita Sahdiieva advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win over Texas Tech's Olivia Peet and Metka Komac. They will face Sonia Smagina and Tiffany Lagarde of Kansas in the semifinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Baylor's second doubles team, Olivia Malm and Brooke Thompson, dropped an 8-4 decision to Anna Turco and Manami Ukita of Kansas State.
In singles, Shcherbinina advanced to the semifinals in Flight A with a pair of wins on Friday. She topped Oklahoma's Emma Staker, 6-4, 6-1, before defeating Kansas' Sofia Smagina, 7-6(5), 6-2. Shcherbinina will face Oklahoma State's Oona Orpana at 10:05 a.m.
Sahdiieva advanced to the second round after her opponent retired due to injury. She dropped a hard-fought match to Texas Tech's Olivia Peet, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). Sahdiieva will play Kansas State's Manami Ukita at 10:25 a.m. in the Flight B Extra bracket.
Malm fell to Kansas State's Florentine Dekkers, 6-4, 7-6(3), and Thompson dropped her singles match, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-4), to Kansas' Mariana Manyoma Velasquez. The two Bears will play in the Flight C Consolation bracket at 10:30 a.m. Malm will face West Virginia's Pei Ju Hsieh, while Thompson will play Texas Tech's Camryn Stepp.
