Men’s Basketball Captures First-Ever National Championship

National Champions!! That has a certain ring to it, doesn't it? After clinching the program's first Big 12 title in the 25-year history of the league and the first conference championship since winning the old Southwest Conference in 1950, the Bears were not quite satisfied.

Entering the NCAA Tournament as a number one seed, another first for the Baylor men's basketball program, the Bears chewed up the competition as they made it all the way to the National Championship game against the previously unbeaten Gonzaga Bulldogs. From the opening tip, the Bears set the tone with better energy, hustle, shooting, and execution, dominating the game from start to finish in an 86-70 victory to secure the program's first national championship.

Baylor finished 10-23 from 3-point range, and finished with just 9 turnovers. Jared Butler led the way with 22 points as MaCio Teague had 19, Davion Mitchell had 15, and Adam Flagler had 13. That quartet of guards had carried the Bears all season, scoring 69 of the Bears 86 points. Mark Vital chipped in with six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

With the numerous awards, accolades, and recognitions still pouring in for this Baylor Men's Basketball team, it is safe to say they will be remembered as the greatest of all-time in Baylor history. Like Coach Scott Drew said, "There will never be another FIRST NATIONAL CHAMPION!"
