Student-Athletes from Football, Baseball, Women’s Golf and Equestrian selected as October Champions of the Month
WACO, Texas – Tevin Williams III (football), Gabe Craig (baseball), Sera Hasegawa (women's golf) and Dominika Silvestri (equestrian) have been selected as the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE) October Champions of the Month.
This award recognizes student-athletes who achieve their personal bests in the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth.
Each of these student-athletes was nominated by a SACE team member based upon their embodiment of each of the four pillars.
Playing against his hometown school, Williams had a career-high three tackles in the Bears' 36-25 loss to No. 7 Oklahoma State on Oct. 1. The redshirt freshman from Stillwater, Okla., is a backup cornerback and special teams contributor who has played in four of the five games this season after playing the last three games in 2021.
Majoring in pre-psychology, Williams "has been a model student-athlete since arriving on campus in Summer 2021," said Emily DeRatt, Assistant AD for Academic Services. Surrounded by an "amazing support staff," Tevin said he is "thankful for everyone who devotes their time and energy into making sure we succeed in the classroom and off the field. I'm proud to be a part of Baylor and can't imagine being anywhere else."
Despite "a little bit of chaos," arriving late this summer as a transfer from Tyler Junior College, Craig has "remained on top of his education and work," DeRatt said of the communications major. "He has exceeded expectations from a study hall standpoint every week thus far."
The 6-5 right-handed pitcher is a junior from Tyler, Texas, who was 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 23 innings last season at TJC after working out of the bullpen in four games the year before at Texas A&M. "So far, my time here has been such a rewarding experience," Gabe said. "I am so grateful to be surrounded and supported by such great people. I have grown so much already, and I am looking forward to what's next."
Hasegawa, an international transfer student in her first semester at Baylor, "is on pace to earning a 4.00 GPA" despite having to overcome the language barrier, said Ramone Cooper, Associate AD for Academic Services. "She has also been extremely proactive in planning for her next semester here, communicating with her campus advisor and SACE academic coach regarding her academic plan."
The Southern Conference Freshman of the Year last season at East Tennessee State, where she had a team-best 72.52-stroke average, Sera tied for 15that 1-under 209 in her debut tournament for the Bears. "Baylor has a great academic presence and strong atmosphere," said Hasegawa, a sophomore from Gifu, Japan, majoring in health, kinesiology and leisure studies, "so I am trying to uphold my end and do well for Baylor."
A senior finance major from Andover, Mass., Silvestri was an NCEA Academic All-American and Academic All-Big 12 first-team selection last year and also earned NCEA Flat Rider of the Month in March. Early in her senior season, Dominika scored a point for the Bears with a Flat ride versus Georgia and in Fences against South Carolina.
This past summer, she served as a finance intern at Dell Technologies. "It has been a privilege to be a part of Baylor Athletics and attend such an amazing University," Dominika said. "They have allowed me to really grow as a person and an athlete, as well as prepare me for success after graduation."
