BU’s Heffernan and Bosco card a pair of 69s to lead the Bears

DALLAS, Texas – Baylor men's golf shot a 4-under 284 on Sunday to finish in a tie for fourth with one of two SMU squads in the field, in round one at the Trinity Forest Invitational.

The Bears sit just five shots back of the leader, Arkansas Little Rock, which shot a 9-under 279. Just four shots separate spots No. 2-6 on the leaderboard after one round.

Zach Heffernan carded a career-best 3-under 69 on Sunday to finish in a tie for eighth. The sophomore responded to his first bogey of the day at No. 4 with birdies at Nos. 5 and 8, before a bogey at No. 9 put him at even par as he made the turn. He then birdied four of his next seven holes, with the only blemish coming as a bogey at the par-4 13^th. Heffernan has now played three of his last four rounds at par or better.

Trey Bosco continued his strong play with a 3-under 69 to tie with Heffernan and three others in 8^th place. Bosco played his outward nine at even par with a bogey at No. 3 and a birdie at No. 9. The junior then made birdies at Nos. 10, 12, 15 and 18, with just one bogey at No. 13, to shoot a back-nine 33 and finish under par for the second time in three rounds.

Tyler Isenhart shot an even-par 72 on Sunday to tie for 24^th after one round. The Chicago, Illinois, native responded to a bogey at No. 2 with birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 to get to 1-under through nine holes. A birdie at 10 pushed the senior to 2-under, where he stayed through 12 holes until bogeys at Nos. 13, 15 and 18, around a birdie at 14, dropped him back to even par for the day.

Luke Dossey carded a 2-over 74 to tie for 51st through one round. After an opening birdie at No. 1, he bogeyed four of his next five holes to drop to 3-over, before a birdie at No. 7 got him back to 2-over through nine. A birdie at No. 14 was bookended by a bogey at 13 and a double at 15, dropping Dossey to four over on the round. A pair of birdies at 17 and 18 helped the senior close his round strong.

Johnny Keefer shot a 5-over 77 on Sunday and finished tied for 74^th. The senior opened with a birdie at No. 1, but made bogeys at Nos. 2, 7, 9, 10, 13 and 15 to finish the round.

Jonas Appel made his third start as an individual on Sunday and carded an even-par 72. The freshman double-bogeyed his opening hole, but played his next eight holes at even par with a birdie at No. 14 and a bogey at No. 16. Appel played his next 11 holes at 2-under par on the strength of back-to-back birdies at Nos. 4 and 5 to finish tied for 24^th.

Furman's Will Morlan leads all individuals after a 5-under 67 in round one.

HIGHLIGHTS

Leading the team in par-4 scoring average entering this week, Trey Bosco tied for the second-best par-4 scoring average on Sunday (3.70).
BU's 21 birdies led the field in round one.
As a team, the Bears had the second-best par-4 scoring average on Sunday (4.04).

STAT OF THE DAY

In just their third event of the season, Trey Bosco (5) and Zach Heffernan (3) have now matched their previous career best for rounds at par or better in a single season.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears will be grouped with Florida Atlantic and SMU (B) in round two, beginning for BU on the No. 1 tee with Johnny Keefer at 9:20 a.m. CT. Luke Dossey will follow at 9:30 a.m., just ahead of Tyler Isenhart at 9:40 a.m. Zach Heffernan begins his second round at 9:50 a.m., with Trey Bosco teeing off in the anchor position at 10:00 a.m.
