Student-Athletes from Soccer, Women’s Track & Field, Football and Men’s Basketball selected as November Champions of the Month
WACO, Texas – Mackenzie Anthony (soccer), Jasmine Gryne (women's track & field), Josh White (football) and Langston Love (men's basketball) have been selected as the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE) November Champions of the Month.
This award recognizes student-athletes who achieve their personal bests in the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth.
Each of these student-athletes was nominated by a SACE team member based upon their embodiment of each of the four pillars.
Despite missing the 2022 soccer season with a torn ACL, Anthony is "killing the game in the classroom and during rehab," said Cecilie Taylor, associate director of academic services. "Her strength staff and trainer have mentioned she is the poster girl of dedication and determination to get back healthy. She has not let this injury define her."
A junior from Wheaton, Ill., majoring in health, kinesiology and leisure studies, Mackenzie led the team in scoring in 2021 with eight goals and three assists. "I'm so grateful for the opportunities that Baylor has brought me, academically and in life," she said. "The people here are always willing to help with anything and constantly pushing me to be my best self."
After earning All-Big 12 honors as a freshman last year with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the conference outdoor meet, Gryne has had a productive fall semester in the classroom, performing at a high level on the track and participating in the Leadership Retreat, "where she built leadership skills to help her become a better leader for her team," said academic coach Travon Carter.
Gryne, a sophomore journalism major from Stockbridge, Ga., also won the hurdles event at her first collegiate outdoor meet with a time of 58.59 at the TCU Invitational. "I am very honored to be named a champion of the month," Jasmine said, "as I have been putting in extra time to the best I can be on and off the track."
A transfer from LSU, White has been a "tremendous addition to the Baylor Athletics family," said Emily DeRatt, Assistant AD for Academic Services. "He always has a smile on his face, as well as a positive attitude. He earned a 4.00 in his first summer term here and has carried that work ethic into his first fall term as well."
White, a third-year sophomore from Houston majoring in communications, has made an impact on Baylor's special teams and appeared in each of the Bears' first 10 games. "It means the world to be able to call myself a Baylor Bear," White said. "Not only am I getting the best education, I am also getting coached by some of the best in the game."
Feeling blessed that God gave him the opportunity to play basketball while working on a communications degree at Baylor, Love said he tries his "best to take full advantage of all that He does for me." A four-star prospect from Universal City, Texas, Love suffered a torn ACL in a preseason scrimmage last year and sat out his first season at Baylor.
Joshua Young, Assistant AD for Academic Services, said Love is "dedicated to mastering fundamentals and pursuing excellence, as he is on track to achieve his personal-best GPA. You can always count on Langston's elite mindset to transfer over in the classroom."
