Student-Athletes from Football, Women’s Track & Field and Acrobatics & Tumbling selected as December Champions of the Month
WACO, Texas – Devyn Bobby (football), Tre Emory (football), Audrey Williamson (women's track & field) and Kensey Schilhab (acrobatics & tumbling) have been selected as the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE) December Champions of the Month.
This award recognizes student-athletes who achieve their personal bests in the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth.
Each of these student-athletes was nominated by a SACE team member based upon their embodiment of each of the four pillars.
One of the few true freshmen who have played in all 12 games this season, Bobby is a backup safety from DeSoto, Texas, who has recorded nine solo tackles and three assists. Majoring in health, kinesiology and leisure studies, he "has been very proactive this semester about getting his school work done," said Molly Ann Walke, associate director of learning support. "He regularly advocates for himself and works to get better every day."
Part of the Baylor football team that will face Air Force in Thursday's Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Devyn said academics mean a lot to him, "because at the end of the day, I want to walk out of Baylor with a degree. And SACE allows us as student-athletes to accomplish that goal."
Making the transition from high school to college, Emory got an early start with two summer classes and "did not miss a beat with classes or athletics" once the fall semester began, said learning specialist Ryan Jolivette. "When fall camp started, his academic production did not decrease. With his positive attitude towards classes and his sport, he will continue to make personal bests in his college career."
A backup defensive lineman who will take on a much larger role next season, the Mount Pleasant, Texas, native saw his first game action in the season opener against UAlbany. "I try really hard to balance my academic and athletic schedule," he said, "and I feel like I do a great job at it. And it's even easier when the SACE group is always there for me when I need them."
Named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team last year as a freshman, Williamson has "gone above and beyond this semester," academic coach Travon Carter said. "She is constantly working to improve her grades. She has spent countless hours in Highers striving for success."
A pre-business major from Dripping Springs, Texas, Williamson recorded personal bests in the 200 and 400 meters indoors and then opened the outdoor season with a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the Longhorn Invitational. "I'm thrilled to be named an academic champion," she said. "All of the time in Highers paid off, especially with my exams this past week."
On track to finish the fall semester with a 4.0 GPA, Schilhab "does a fantastic job utilizing all of the resources that SACE has to offer, including tutoring and weekly check-in meetings," said Quentin Hendershot, associate director of academic services. "Kensey continues to uplift those around her by willingly being a point of contact for her teammates who need additional help or a partner to study with."
The freshman from Pearland, Texas, says she is "so blessed for the staff and support we get here at Baylor. Without their help, I wouldn't have been able to push myself as much athletically or academically. They taught me how to hold myself accountable and be disciplined enough to turn my goals to a reality. And I'm immensely grateful for them."
