Bears battle in opening round three-set thriller
THE RUNDOWN
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Baylor's Alicia Herrero and Mel Krywoj advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Doubles Championships with their 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) win over Wake Forest's Casie Wooten and Samantha Martinelli.
The Bears got off to a quick start, as an ace by Herrero propelled them to a 2-0 lead in the first set. Baylor led by 4-0 at one point, but the Demon Deacons battled back to make the score 5-4 in favor of BU before the Bears captured the opening set, 6-4.
It was a back-and-forth start to the second set until Wake Forest took over to land the 6-3 edge and force a third set.
The third set was played as a 10-point tiebreaker. The Demon Deacons held a 7-6 lead, but the Bears fought back to prevail, 11-9.
Next up for Herrero and Krywoj will be Georgia Tech's Ava Hraster and Kylie Bilchev who defeated Florida's Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein, 7-6, 6-4. The No. 36 Jackets are 20-9 on the season. The Round of 16 match is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
