Baylor has had multiple draft picks in five of the last six years
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball third-year sophomore outfielder Kyle Nevin and fourth-year junior Jack Pineda were each selected on the final day of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday afternoon.
This marks the fifth time in the last six years that the Bears have had multiple MLB draft picks in the same season.
Nevin was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 11th round with the 345th overall pick, while Pineda came off the board just 10 spots later to the Kansas City Royals at 355th overall in the 12th round.
Behind a breakout 2022 campaign, Nevin hit .304 in his third year of college baseball with a career-high eight home runs and a team-leading 49 RBIs. He picked up All-Big 12 honorable mention honors for the first time in his career in addition to being named Big 12 Player of the Week for the first time following a 9-for-16 week which included five extra-base hits. The Poway, Calif., native also tied Baylor's record with three doubles in a Big 12 game as part of a career-best five-hit performance against Texas Tech on May 1.
In just his second season at Baylor, Pineda anchored the BU defense at shortstop in starting all 54 games and helping the team lead the nation with 64 double plays turned on the year. The Albuquerque, N.M., product hit .300 with seven home runs and 35 RBIs on his way to his second-career All-Big 12 honorable mention recognition. He also collected Big 12 Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career after recording eight hits to the tune of a .471 batting average in four games during the final week of the 2022 campaign.
Both Nevin and Pineda were named to the 2022 Shriners Children's College Classic All-Tournament Team after outstanding performances at Minute Maid Park in which the Bears went 2-1 and tied for the weekend's best record.
Three selections are Baylor's most in a single draft since 2019, while this marks just the second time BU has seen more than two players picked since 2013.
