WACO, Texas - The Baylor "B" Association and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the 10th annual Baylor University Sports Persons of the Year (BUSPY) award banquet Monday at the Ferrell Center.
The banquet honored Baylor student-athletes for their commitment and hard work in academics and community service. The event celebrated the NCAA Student-Athlete Day with awards, a slide show and surprise guest speaker Chad Hennings, former member of the Dallas Cowboys. Hennings, who graduated from the Air Force Academy and flew combat missions during the Gulf War, spoke about the importance of not only being a team leader, but being a leader for the Baylor community as well. He also stressed the need for balancing family, athletic, community and academic commitments.
Several students were honored throughout the evening, and teams were also awarded for their academic success. The High Team GPA awards were given to men's tennis and soccer. Every person in attendance voted on the Play/Performance of the Year award, which was given to the Baylor men's 4x400-meter relay national championship squad and to the Lady Bears basketball Sweet 16 appearance.
Jeremy Wariner of men's track and Chelsea Whitaker of women's basketball received the Iron Man/Woman awards. Die Hard awards were given to John Garrett of football and Jordan Davis of women's basketball. Robbie McKenzie and Jessica Stratton won the Basketball Academic Awards for having the highest GPA of their respective teams. Other academic awards honored Kim Wilmoth of softball and Michael Griffin of baseball.
