WACO, Texas – Baylor track and field added South Dakota transfer Demar Francis for the 2022-2023 season, head coach Michael Ford announced on Tuesday. He makes his way to Waco from Saint Thomas, Jamaica and Excelsior High School.
"First of all, I'd like to welcome Demar Francis to the Baylor track family," said Ford. "Demar is a Summit League Champion in the 200 and 400 indoor and outdoor, so he'll give us some range and depth in those events, as well as the relays. He'll help us score in conference and be a regional qualifier. He will definitely be a vital asset to our program this upcoming season."
The three-time 400-meter Summit League Champion won the event in the 2021 outdoor season and swept the title in 2022. He also swept the 200-meter title in 2022 and finished runner-up in 2021.
Francis was also a member of the two-time Summit League Champion 4x100-meter relay squad, which clocked a 39.94 in the 2021 season.
Francis holds collegiate career-bests of 6.87 seconds in the 60 meters, 10.67 in the 100 meters, 20.65 in the 200 meters and 45.79 in the 400.
Before South Dakota, Francis attended Excelsior High School in Jamaica. He broke a 28-year-old school record in the quarter mile, previously led by Olympic medalist Gregory Haughton with a 46.87-second race. He also competed with the school's 4x400 squad that won the 2019 ISSA Athletics Championship with a school-record 3:10.94.
