FORT WORTH, Texas -- With a pair of hard-fought singles wins Baylor women's tennis standouts Paula Barañano and Liubov Kostenko rolled to the third round, highlighting the Friday results at the ITA Texas Regionals, hosted by TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
"I'm really proud of the way we competed today," Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano said. "Specifically in Paula's singles matches she dug deep and played big when the chips were down. Luba (Kostenko) was a warrior and found the energy and belief to come back from a match point down to win. The doubles performance was strong for this time of year. I appreciate that the ladies are getting out of their comfort zone and trying new things on the court. The coachability of this team is very high. Overall, I'm just really proud of all of the ladies today. They had a great attitude and a consistent effort through a lot of challenging matches today."
A senior out of Argentina, Barañano had a strong day while competing in both singles and doubles. She earned a pair of thrilling, three-set singles wins, topping Rice's Saara Orav and UTSA's Lexie Weir to advance to the round of 16. She also teamed with Daniella Dimitrov to take down Abilene Christian's pair, 8-2 to move to the third round.
Barañano and Dimitrov will face Jasmine Adams and Matilde Morais from North Texas at 10:45 a.m. Barañano will face TCU's Destinee Martins at 8 a.m. in singles.
A Ukranian freshman, Kostenko posted a win in singles over Palina Saulevich from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to open the day before earning a three-set win over 14th seeded Yu-Chin Tsai from TCU to move into the round of 16. Kostenko formed a doubles team with Brooke Thompson and posted an 8-4 winner over the team from Houston.
Kostenko and Thompson will face the duo of Marlee Sein and Vivian Ovrootsky from Texas at 10:45 a.m. In singles, Kostenko will face off with Ovrootsky at 8 a.m. In the consolation bracket of singles, Thompson is set to face Grace Thomas from Texas.
