Shcherbinina picked up her first ranked win of the year on No. 1 singles
WACO, Texas – In its third top-25 matchup of the season, the Baylor women's tennis team (7-3) fell to No. 25 Wisconsin (8-2), 6-1, at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
Despite the loss, Alina Shcherbinina grabbed her first ranked win of the season, and sixth singles victory of the year, with a 7-5, 6-4 win over #57 Ava Markham on court No. 1. Additionally, Liubov Kostenko made her first appearance as a Bear, taking a set off her opponent on No. 4 and battling with Isabella Harvison in an unfinished doubles match at the No. 3 position.
"We're proud of the way Alina is competing," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "She has always been a fighter and is maturing tremendously as a player and as a person. That has been evidenced in her play so far this season. It was also exciting to have Liubov in the lineup because she has put in a lot of work to prepare for this opportunity. Overall, there have been improvements on a lot of the courts, even though the results didn't go our way today."
The Bears return to action next Friday at 5 p.m. when the Arkansas Razorbacks come to town.
