Shaylon Govan hits grand slam in 7-run fourth inning
But the Bears (4-1) exploded for seven runs and pushed the Razorbacks (5-0) to the limit before falling 11-7 Sunday morning in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Kickoff.
"We kind of dug a hole, and we made some mistakes that put us in that hole," Baylor coach Glenn Moore said. "Kind of frustrating to be that far down, that quick. Against the SEC Pitcher of the Year, it's easy to give up whenever you dig a hole that deep. But I was really happy with the way they fought back and ended up running her."
Baylor starter Dariana Orme held the Razorbacks to one earned run in the first three innings, but they took advantage of an error to scratch across two more in the third and put up a 5-spot in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead on Cylie Halvorson's three-run home run.
Delce was throwing a two-hit shutout through the first three innings, but five of Baylor's first six batters reached base to open the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Presleigh Pilon and back-to-back walks by Taylor Strain and McKenzie brought in the first two runs and got Delce out of the game.
Reliever Robyn Herron gave up a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Emily Hott, then Shaylon Govan blasted a grand-slam home run over the center-field wall to make it a one-run game, 8-7.
"That was an epic at-bat right there," Moore said. "Lots of fouling off pitches, and then she got all of it. That went easily 300 feet, dead center. She's one that I said at the beginning, she's going to challenge a lot of records before she's done here. A scary hitter, (former Baylor All-American) Ashley Monceaux comparison. She has quality at-bats every time up. The good thing is we've got some good hitters around her, too, that will keep them from being able to pitch her too careful."
Aliyah Binford tossed back-to-back scoreless innings against an Arkansas team that had only three scoreless innings combined in its first four games. But the Razorbacks added some insurance with three runs in the top of the seventh on homers by Spencer Prigge and Atalyia Rijo
Callie Turner picked up the save, retiring nine of the last 10 batters she faced, with Hott reaching base on an error leading off the seventh for the Bears' only baserunner in the last three innings.
For the weekend, Baylor hit .406 and scored a combined 41 runs. The Bears opened with a 12-2 run-rule win over Southern Utah and rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to beat Weber State, 8-4, on the opening day of the tournament, then beat Southern Utah, 5-2, and run-ruled UNLV, 9-1, on Saturday.
"Offensively, this team is potentially one of the best we've had in a while," Moore said. "Amber Toven was on fire, going with pitches, spray-hitting the whole field."
Coming back from an injury, Orme had two strong outings in the tournament, giving up seven hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks in 6.0 innings.
"I didn't think she would be anywhere near where she is already," Moore said. "To even think about throwing her and starting her against Arkansas tells you how happy we are with how far she's come in a short amount of time. Having said that, she is a long way from being where she ultimately will be and could be without the injury. And she did some new things, too. She had several off-speed pitches that tied them up, that I really liked and saw promise in."
In their home opener, the Bears will host Stephen F. Austin (3-2) at 3 p.m. Friday in the opening game of the Getterman Classic. They will also play Longwood (1-3), top-ranked Oklahoma (5-0) and Army (2-2) in the three-day tournament at Getterman Stadium.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Baylor Softball fell to No. 7 Arkansas, 11-7, Sunday morning in the Bears' final game at the UNLV Rebel kickoff in Las Vegas, Nev.
Baylor, now 4-1 on the season, got within one run of the Razorbacks after a grand slam in the fourth inning.
THE RUNDOWN
After a leadoff single from Arkansas, Baylor starter Dariana Orme (1-1) sat down the next three Razorbacks in order to keep them off of the board in the first inning.
The Bears got a runner on in the first, when Amber Toven singled to left field, but weren'table to bring her around to score.
Arkansas plated two in the second to take the lead before the Bears were retired in order.
After the Razorbacks extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third, the Bears threatened in the bottom half of the inning. Zadie LaValley led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk and a fielder's choice, to put two on with one out. Toven singled to the pitcher to load the bases, but two back-to-back fly outs ended the inning.
The Razorbacks plated five runs in the fourth in extending the lead to 8-0.
The Bears came up big in the bottom of the fourth, putting up seven runs. Aliyah Binford scored first in the inning off of a sacrifice fly from Presleigh Pilon. LaValley reached on an error and Taylor Strain walked to load the bases before back-to-back walks cut the Razorbacks' lead to 8-3.
With the bases still loaded, Shaylon Govan launched a grand slam over the wall in center field to make it a one-run game, 8-7.
Binford tossed two scoreless innings, keeping Arkansas at bay, but the Razorbacks answered in the top of the seventh with two home runs that extended the final margin to 11-7.

QUOTABLE – Head Coach Glenn Moore
"It was a good start. We got the nerves out, saw a lot of good things. The good thing is, we certainly are improving offensively. We've been lacking in that area the last few years, and I'm really, really happy with the mindset of our hitters right now."
