On a day when pitcher Dariana Orme at least looked human, giving up a two-run homer in the second inning, the Baylor bats and defense had her back in Sunday's championship game of the Baylor Invitational.
Responding to the early 2-0 deficit, the 25th-ranked Bears (13-1) batted around twice and put up a season-high 15 runs on 12 hits, seven walks, two hit batters and a pair of errors in a 15-2 run-rule victory over the Minnesota Gophers.
"She gave up that two-run home run, and the first thing we all said was, 'We've got your back, Dari. We've got your back,''' said Emily Hott, who had two hits in a six-run fourth inning. "And guess what? We went up there and put up five runs right away. We showed Minnesota that we're not going to back down. If you come into our house and score, we're going to score back and we're going to score more."
Finishing off a perfect 5-0 weekend, Baylor won its ninth-straight game and beat a Minnesota team (8-6) that knocked off 21st-ranked Maryland twice in the three-day tournament.
"I think we sent a message in the first game against Maryland," Baylor coach Glenn Moore said of Friday's 5-0 win over the Terrapins, when Orme threw her second no-hitter of the season.
"That probably carried us momentum-wise through the whole weekend. Make no mistake, that's a great team we just beat. Might not have had (Autumn) Pease in the circle, she certainly makes a difference, but we took care of that earlier and were able to do what we needed to do against the team we saw today."
The reigning National Pitcher of the Week, Orme (5-1) had not allowed an earned run in four appearances spread over 21.0 innings at Getterman Stadium.
That changed in a hurry when native Texan Addison Leschber led off the second inning with a single through the right side and Taylor Krapf followed with a two-run shot over the right-field wall, her fifth home run of the weekend and seventh of the year.
Breezy Burnett reached on an infield single to short, but she was quickly erased when Sydney Strelow hit into a 4-6-3 double play, a sweet connection between second baseman Presleigh Pilon, shortstop Amber Toven and first baseman Shaylon Govan.
"That 4-6-3 double play was as smooth as I've ever seen," Moore said. "I think the more we do those types of things, the better (Orme) is going to pitch with that kind of confidence."
The bottom of the second started with Minnesota starter Jacie Hambrick (4-1) loading the bases with a walk and back-to-back hit batters. After McKenzie Wilson tied it up with a two-run single up the middle, three more runs came across on consecutive hits by Taylor Strain, Toven and Govan to give the Bears a 5-2 lead.
"Having people that hit before me get on base, I know I've got to have my pitcher's back," said Wilson, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to raise her batting average to .432. "I think we all did that today. We all played as a whole unit, and it's wonderful to see."
Baylor didn't exactly have a hit parade in the third, but the Bears tacked on four more runs on three walks, a Gopher error and a Pilon RBI single to go up 9-2.
While Orme breezed through the last three innings, retiring 12 of the last 13 batters she faced, Baylor added six two-out runs in the fourth on a Pilon sac fly and singles by Wilson, Strain and Hott.
When Hott came up for the second time in the inning, she had to retrieve the protective pads and batting glove she had left with first-base coach Meagan Diaz on her previous at-bat.
"I think it shows how smart our batters are because we scored 15 runs not off 20 hits or something like that," Hott said. "We had girls going up there, waiting to see the pitch and hit the pitch they knew they could hit. We had girls that walked, got hit by a pitch. And when the bases got loaded, every girl came up and stepped up when we needed them."
Orme, Wilson, Govan, Toven, Strain and Hott were named to the Baylor Invitational all-tournament team and were joined by the Gophers' Krapf, Pease, Burnett and Kayla Chavez.
"I would say (Orme) didn't have her best stuff, but I also have a lot of respect for Minnesota. That's a scary lineup," Moore said. They drew blood first, and I certainly loved the way we responded."
Continuing a 14-game home stand, the Bears will host UT Arlington (6-8) at 6 p.m. Tuesday and then Texas A&M (11-4) and Sam Houston (5-9) for next weekend's Ode to Joy Invitational.
"This team is fun to watch," Wilson said, "and I have no doubt in my mind . . . that Getterman is going to be packed pretty soon and we're going to bring the fans back into Getterman. It's going to be a fun time."
WACO, Texas – The No. 25-ranked Baylor softball team needed just five innings to win the 2023 Baylor Invitational, running away with a 15-2 victory over Minnesota at Getterman Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Bears moved to 13-1 on the year and picked up their ninth-straight. Only one of Baylor's 12 hits was for extra bases, as the Bears used five multi-hit performances to power past Minnesota.
Minnesota dropped to 8-6 on the season, as the Gopher pitching staff combined for seven walks and just a pair of strikeouts in the setback.
THE RUNDOWN
The Gophers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second, before the Bears scratched five runs across on four hits in the home half of the inning.
Baylor extended its cushion in the third, drawing three walks and utilizing a hit from Presleigh Pilon and fielding error by Minnesota to surge ahead, 9-2.
A six-run fourth inning was highlighted by a pair of hits from Emily Hott, as the junior pushed the Bears ahead by 13 with her second RBI of the game.
Dariana Orme and the Bears worked a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth to remain undefeated at home and win the Baylor Invitational.
HIGHLIGHTS
The top of the Baylor batting order led the way with three RBI apiece. McKenzie Wilson and Amber Toven went 2-for-3 at the dish, while Taylor Strain went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Wilson scratched a team-leading three runs across, and Ana Watson drew a team-high two walks.
Orme picked up her sixth victory of the season in the circle, moving to 6-1 on the year. The right-handed hurler registered three strikeouts, bringing her season total to 36.
STAT OF THE GAME
5 – The Bears loaded the bases five times throughout the game, including three times in the fourth inning.
QUOTABLE
Head coach Glenn Moore on this weekend as a whole…
"Probably going into this tournament, we didn't know that it would have as strong a field as it was. But as we played the other teams play the last couple of weeks, I think we sent a message in the first game against Maryland that we're here to play. And that probably carried us momentum-wise through the whole weekend. Make no mistake, that's a great team we just beat (Minnesota). Might not have had Pease in the circle, she certainly makes a difference, but we took care of that earlier and were able to do what we needed to do against the team that we saw today.
I thought the matchup, by the way, was perfect. You don't want to play two teams like that on the opening day of the tournament, but you come away with a win throwing your bullpen and then able to throw your ace against them for the championship game. That's why you want to stay as the top seeds, so you're able to do some things and not have to pitch Dari until this game. We brought her in (yesterday), but really had enough pitches in that appearance last night to give her a good bullpen work."
Emily Hott on supplying Dariana (Orme) with run support…
"When she went out there and gave up that two-run home run, the first thing we said to her was that we had her back. And guess what? We went up there and put up five runs right away. We just showed Minnesota that we weren't going to back down. Just knowing that we have pitchers that can come back and throw as well as she did after giving up that home run. The offense can always have their backs."
McKenzie Wilson the team's confidence…
"I think we're confident, but it's humble confidence. We're not trying to get too high, and we don't want to plateau. We want to keep improving and keep on taking the steps forward that we need to. This team is fun to watch, and I have no doubt in my mind, as Coach Moore mentioned, that Getterman is going to be packed pretty soon and we're going to bring the fans back into Getterman. It's going to be a fun time."
WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor will continue its homestand with its first midweek matchup of the season, hosting UT Arlington at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, before welcoming Sam Houston and Texas A&M to Waco for the Ode to Joy Invitational next weekend.
