WACO, Texas – No. 8 Baylor equestrian (5-6, 2-3) is set to round out its regular season schedule against No. 1 SMU (8-1, 0-0) and No. 3 TCU (10-2, 3-2) with a pair of meets this weekend.
The Bears face the Mustangs in Waco on Thursday, March 2, at the Willis Family Equestrian Center with first ride slated for 11 a.m. Then, on Saturday, March 4, BU heads up north to Fort Worth to face the Horned Frogs at 10 a.m. at Bear Creek Farms.
Thursday's competition will mark Baylor's Senior Day meet, honoring 18 fourth- and fifth-year seniors.
The Bears are coming off a narrow 10-9 loss against former No. 7 Oklahoma State, where junior Madison Mitchell put down a career-high 94 in Flat. Mitchell picked up Most Outstanding Performer honors for the second time this season after tallying BU's second-highest Flat score in program history.
In Flat, BU is riding a six-meet win streak with seniors Dominika Silvestri and Maddie Vorhies each coming off 92's in their last rides. Vorhies set a career high and extended her unbeaten streak in Flat to six with her point-winning ride. Silvestri also set a career high and improved to 9-2 on the year with her win. Also, freshman Lauren Reid collected a personal-best 87 in the event against the Cowgirls.
Over in the Western arena, Baylor's Reining squad has now won five of its last six events with a 3-2 victory over OSU last time out. Fifth-year senior Madaline Callaway leads the way with a four-meet unbeaten streak entering the weekend.
Baylor leads the all-time series over SMU, 7-5, and also holds a 25-9 advantage over TCU. BU fell to the Mustangs on the road earlier this season, 13-6, but upset the then-top ranked Horned Frogs, 12-7, at home on Oct. 21.
Both the Mustangs and Horned Frogs are coming off losses in their last meets, as Auburn topped SMU 15-5 and Oklahoma State beat TCU 11-9, both on Feb. 25.
Live scoring will be available for both meets and can be found here (vs. SMU), and here (at TCU).
Following this weekend's meets, Baylor will head to Stillwater, Okla., for the 2023 Big 12 Championship at the Pedigo-Hull Equestrian Center. The Bears currently sit third in the conference standings.
