A back-and-forth battle on No. 5 helped the Jayhawks hold on for 4-3 win
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Baylor women's tennis (8-9, 0-3 Big 12) climbed its way back to knot the score at three-all with No. 19 Kansas (11-2, 2-1 Big 12) on Friday night at the Jayhawk Tennis Center, but the nationally-ranked Jayhawks held on for the 4-3 win.
In doubles play, Liubov Kostenko and Alina Shcherbinina fell 6-3 to KU's Roxana Manu and Jocelyn Massey to give them the early advantage towards the doubles point. Isabella Harvison and Anita Sahdiieva responded with a 6-2 win over Maria Titova and Tamari Gagoshidize on court No. 2, as it came down to the wire on court No. 3. Kansas' Malkia Ngounoue and Heike Janse Van Vuuren outlasted Daniella Dimitrov and Paula Barañano, 7-6, earning the doubles point for the Jayhawks.
In singles, Kansas pushed ahead, 2-0, before Barañano put the Bears on the board with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win over Silvia Maria Costache at No. 6 singles. The Jayhawks grabbed the 7-6, 6-2 win on No. 1 singles to jump out to a 3-1 advantage, but the Bears bounced back to level the score with wins by Shcherbinina and Kostenko on courts No. 2 and No. 4, respectively.
It came down to court No. 5 as Dimitrov was fighting to keep her win streak alive as she exchanged points with KU's Tamari Gagoshidze, but Gagoshidze held on for the 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory to win it for the Jayhawks.
The Bears will continue action in Kansas on Sunday when they travel to face Kansas State at noon. Live stats are available for fans to follow the action.
