Student-Athletes from Softball, Volleyball, Men’s Basketball and Football selected as March Champions of the Month
WACO, Texas – Dariana Orme (softball), Faith Lynch (volleyball), Adam Flagler (men's basketball) and Josh Cameron (football) have been selected as the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE) March Champions of the Month.
This award recognizes student-athletes who achieve their personal bests in the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth.
Each of these student-athletes was nominated by a SACE team member based upon their embodiment of each of the four pillars.
A junior from Vacaville, Calif., Orme was named the National Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 21 after throwing the softball program's first seven-inning perfect game in a 3-0 shutout victory over SFA. She added a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over then-No. 21 Maryland and is 10-2 with a 0.79 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 79.2 innings for a 20th-ranked Baylor team that is off to a 23-5 start.
A transfer from Fresno State last year who is majoring in sociology, "Dari does a great job staying in contact with her professors to ensure she is on top of her work," said Quentin Hendershot, associate director of academic services. "What they offer here academically, as well as athletically, is just so big," Orme said. "It definitely helps me calm my nerves when I need a little bit of help in the classroom, knowing that they're just one phone call away."
Chosen to represent Baylor Athletics this summer as a Nike intern, "Faith is the quintessential student-athlete," said Lauren Kirby, Assistant AD for Learning Support. "Her success in the classroom has paid off as she was recently accepted into a four plus one graduate program in Communications."
A sophomore from Magnolia, Texas, Lynch created her own podcast, "Dear Sports," where she "talks sports" with Baylor coaches, student-athletes and administrative staff. She also participated as a panelist for a presentation for faculty and staff about understanding and supporting the student-athlete experience. "SACE has been such an amazing resource in helping me succeed academically and start to prepare for post-graduation," she said.
Leading scorer for the 11th-ranked men's basketball team (15.6 ppg, 4.6 assists), Flagler is one of the few holdovers from the Bears' 2021 national championship team. "I have been very fortunate to be able to represent this school," said Flagler, a senior who ranked second in the Big 12 in assist/turnover ratio at 2.7. "There have been countless times where the staff has helped me through my academics here at Baylor to make being so close to graduation possible."
A health science studies major from Duluth, Ga., he transferred to BU after earning Big South Freshman of the Year honors in 2019 at Presbyterian. "Adam is an incredible scholar who will have a remarkable career in the medical industry one day," said Josh Young, Assistant AD for Academic Services. "He has built intentional relationships with his peers and professors, who have immense respect for him."
Going "above and beyond" with the character formation pillar, Cameron was chosen by the football coaching staff to participate in the eight-week Leadership Institute program and also volunteered to attend the weekend Leadership Retreat. "He is the true definition of a Champion for Life," said Krista Smith, Director of Character Formation. "His intentionality to be engaged, ask questions and show up authentically with enthusiasm is so appreciated."
A redshirt sophomore from Cedar Park, Texas, majoring in pre-business, Josh had a breakout season with 28 catches for 386 yards after being awarded a scholarship. "I have learned how to step outside of my comfort zone and step into new situations," he said. "Since the Leadership Institute and Leadership Retreat, I go into every situation with confidence and the ability to be my authentic self."
